Today, Stem Cell Research is advancing rapidly.  Recently, UCLA graduate student, Ryan Schmidt, received a $50,000 two-year grant for his research in Locus-specific ChIP-MS, "an innovative new technology for studying epigenetic gene regulation during stem cell differentiation." 19

Issues
Today, stem cell transplantation is being used experimentally in patients with scleroderma, an autoimmune disease in which the sufferer's skin and ligaments harden and their joints become painful and have less mobility.  While it is showing promising results (50% of patients had improvement, and there was 40% improvement in skin score and "an impressive 90% improvement in ability to function." 20
