Saab 900 SE Turbo - Sludge
Heavy engine oil deposits, sometimes referred to as tar, sludge, etc.  Pictures show normal reddish varnish, with layers of black tar-like deposits on top.

Engine suffered turbo failure at 84k miles, valve cover leaks at 100k, a plugged oil screen and worn timing chain and guides around 107k.  Rod and main bearings were replaced and balance chain removed at 114k.

Pics taken  at 125k miles, approximately one year and 12k miles later after several attempts at cleaning the engine using chemical cleaners, including Auto-Rx, with few if any results.
