Fraga's Portuguese-American Bakery

Our History:

Fraga's Portuguese-American Bakery was founded in 1990. Our family bakes everything fresh daily! The owner, Jose Fraga, immigrated from Portugal to the United States when he was only 8 years old. His mother taught him how to bake and he turned his passion into a small local business! Our employees speak both Portuguese and English to accomodate all of our customers. Come in to try our baked goods and have a taste of the old country!

Documentation of the Development Process:

This website was intended to serve as a menu page and detail some history about the bakery. I used techniques learned throughout the course to make the website user friendly and visually appealing. It features a menu built by using a table with rows of pictures for each item, rows for the names of the items, and rows with descriptions of each item. There is also a form to sign up for deals and promotions. It also features an embedded youtube video as well as an image on the homepage that is linked to the menu page. The purpose of this site is to attract more customers to the bakery by displaying the menu with images and descriptions and allow them to sign up to recieve deals and promotions.

Defense of the Final Product:

I chose to make this fictional business based on my parent's former business which was actually named Fraga's Portuguese-American Bakery. I created a logo based off of the Portuguese flag and used the logo and flag for the website's color palette. I wanted a visually appealing website so I chose to follow the F shaped user viewing pattern. I placed the logo in the top left corner with the title of the site to the right of it in a red background. Also to the right of the logo below the title, is a green navigation bar with a red hover effect to show the links are clickable. Keeping the same theme throughout the sites pages makes it more professional. Below the header is white space where data, images, tables and forms are placed. On the home page is an image of a glass case filled with baked goods with text saying "Browse Our Menu" which has a link in the image to the menu page. Adding a link in the image and embedding the youtube video makes the site more engaging to users. The menu page features a table with images, names, and descriptions of the food. To make the table more appealing, it is colored in red and green. The form on the contact page is also colored in red and green to be more appealing to the users. It gives the site a more professional look and makes the site more engaging. For the typography, I chose to keep it simple by using Arial for headlines and Times New Roman for regular text. Choosing these fonts will work well across browsers and is easy to read for the end user. I chose these colors and fonts because I wanted to create a simple, yet professional looking site that is easy to navigate and visually appealing. Adding color to the menu table and form makes them more appealing and attracts the users to sign up for promotions and come in to buy our baked goods.

Opportunities for Improvement and Growth:

Building this website as it is now is okay, but there are many opportunities for improvement and growth. If I had more knowledge of html and java, I would have included a fully functional orderform with a cart for users to be able to buy goods online. I would allow customers to place online orders and make online payments. I would also include a members page that allowed user's to sign in and check for any deals or promotions. I wouldn't want to put this final website out to the public just yet. I would like to improve it by adding what I mentioned above, but I believe for the project I have done a decent job building this site.
