The Western Era is so named because people began to move back to the western (main) continent from the eastern one.  With goblins taking over many of the towns formerly occupied by pc's and npc's, people had to find a new way to get rid of them.
While on the eastern continent the westerners learned about the culture extensively.  This included their religion, arts and crafts, fighting techniques, and how to make guns.  Guns became popularized into the western culture to the point where nearly everyone had one, but not everyone had one that worked.
When the westerners came back to the old west they found the use for their guns against the goblins.  The old west also became a place where treasures of looted goblin towns now became booty for Desperados, Bounty Hunters, and Outlaws.
