RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS
UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS
Salary Cap

The Flames announced that they have re-signed 5 restricted free agents this week. The five players are Dion Phaneuf, Robert Nilsson, Dan Paille, Dustin Boyd and Tyson Sexsmith. The Flames are hoping that these players become contributors to a winning team in the future with each of them getting multi-year deals. Phaneuf signs a contract worth $13.5 million over 3 years. Phaneuf is coming off a pretty poor season and has been inconsistent since his break out season in season 3 during the Flames cup winning season. The Flames are counting on Phaneuf to return to the player he was in that season, Phaneuf has only had one + season though and will need to improve if the Flames want any type of success. In the 6 season of stats that are available Phaneuf has averaged 40 points in his career. His offensive side has been decent for a defenseman but if he only improves his defensive game he could be an impact player. Nilsson has only been with the Flames for 3 seasons but has provided the team with solid secondary scoring. Nilssons offensive stats have decreased a little this year but the team was satisfied with his defensive play. Nilsson has averaged 46 points since his rookie season which was only 5 points in 19 games. Nilsson has also improved his passing game this year reaching a career high in assists with 33 with 10 games remaining. Nilssons deal is going to be worth $9 million for 3 years. Paille joined the Flames 4 seasons ago and has gradually improved his play and become a player the Flames can trust in the defensive zone. In 5 seasons in the NWHL Paille has averaged 14 points including his rookie season of 6 points in 18 games. Paille signed a 2 year deal worth $1.0 million per year. Boyd has been a Flame product for his whole career and has yet to play with the team in the full season. In fact this season was the first time he reached 60 games played. Next season may be a make or break season for Boyd as hes got potential but its time for him to reach it. Boyd gets a 3 year deal worth $1.1 million per year. Sexsmith is the goaltender of the future for the Flames. With 4 wins in 6 games last year and 4 wins in 9 games this season Sexsmith has gained the experience towards becoming a starter. Sexsmith however will have to improve his play with mediocre stats of a 3.52GAA and a 0.888 SV% last year and a 4.20GAA and 0.860SV% so far this season. With Backstrom traded Sexsmith will get more playing time next season and a chance to take the starting role if he impresses the team early on.
