A web site must first cater to the company's customers, not just the company. Most customers despise pop-ups, large download times, sounds that automatically play, confusing navigation & other annoyances, yet these are often found on many sites. The general cause is simple: companies and their web designers are trying to impress their users or push a message at any cost.
A web site that does not put the customer's interest first will never realize its maximum potential. A site must be filled with rich content that is easy to find and delivered quickly. This is so important on the web because a user can easily jump to another company's site that showcases the information they are searching.
