We need you here, Howie... Caroline, she died last night.
Howie shuddered at the thought of the phone call he received from his brother the night before, still in disbelief. He turned uncomfortably in his seat on the plane heading home still trying to get some rest but he couldnt sleep.
Home, he thought. A place I havent been to in over a year. Why did I have to be gone so long? Why wasnt I told sooner what was wrong?
He sighed deeply as he gave up on slumber and decided to glare at the many clouds meaninglessly outside of the window. Nothing could get his mind off Caroline. He didnt want to. Hed regret it as he regrets not being there for his sister when she needed him most. His chest felt drowned in hurt. In pain. For some reason that gave him a reminder.
First thing as I get in the hotel room, he notioned, I need to call a doctor.

2 weeks later ~ at a JIVE Records meeting
All the executives had left the room in uncertainty. Now that Howie was back, no one knew where to continue back off at. They claimed they needed to discuss the situation themselves and there we were, also to talk about it amongst ourselves.
I need to tell them, he thought. I need to tell them today. I cant keep this a secret much longer. Ive already waited long enough. Now is my chance...

We need to come to a decision about this. He heard Kevin say just as he was about to speak. He turned quickly towards his green-eyed friend to reply.
A decision to do what? Howie asked. He became curious since this was the first time Kevin had spoken a word at the conference. Howie had also noticed that the whole time before then, Kevin had been staring off blankly as if he was thinking about something very serious.
Kevin looked at him as if he could kill. Look, we already missed out on three concerts... the firsts weve ever missed. Right now it seems we cant stay committed.
Yeah, the young blonde hair man worded in. Its not like us... ourselves dont seem like us anymore and I really dont want to deal with that. I think we should split.
Kevin glanced over at Nick. Moments later he just nodded silently and looked at everyone else. All in this, say I.
AJ was first to throw his hand up. I.
Nick. I.
Kevin. I.
Brians face saddened. He didnt want to see the group go but had felt the same about the situation as pretty much everyone else. I.
Howie gaped at them incredulity. He shook his head, No. No, Im not allowing it.
Look, man... AJ started.
No, you look, Howie interrupted. I am not going to let this happen. You and I started this but that doesnt mean we have to end it. Just because we let a few fans down doesnt mean we have to give up. We can always go back...
Nick, filled with anger, let out a sudden outburst. YOU can go back. We aint going. We already been there and it was because of YOU we had to miss out. It was because of YOU that we came to this. We told you, one day. We would let you see your family one day. YOU ruined our career. YOU!
He threw himself to the ground in tears and Brian went to go comfort him. AJ looked at Howie. Im sorry, man, but we cant go on like this. Look at what you did to Nick. He grew up a Backstreet and you it ruined for him. Its not the same anymore. Its never going be the same again.
So are you out? Kevin asked. He waited a few minutes then added, Or do we have to bring this to court?
Howie looked at him in shocked. He felt like he could let out a river a tears but held them back. He lowered his head not wanting to have to look at anyone. Yes. Yeah, Im out.
He grabbed his jacket off the chair he was sitting in and left. He never looked back.
