B.Sc Human Resources Management (SP) Degree is a newly introduced degree programme being offered by the Human Resources Department attached to the Department of Business Administration , Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce of the University of Sri Jayawardanepura, Sri Lanaka. Being a four year special degree started in 1994 B.Sc. Human Resources Management degree is currently the only specialized degree in Human Resources Management in Sri Lankan University System.

 

Program Philosophy

The ultimate goal of any nation is well-being of mankind. The well being of mankind depends on the well-being of organizations. The food, water, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education, transportation, financing, security and other necessities are created and distributed by modern organizations operating in both public and private sectors. Thus, our stand of living and even our survivals are depend upon. These creations of organizations.

Resources are indispensable for achieving organizational objectives and goals. The success and progress of any organization depend on the effective and efficient utilization of organizational resources. Human Resource is the most important resource among all the resources as it has unique characteristics which other resources don't possess. This degree programme is the study of how organization should manage (also manage) their human resources.

 

Programme Generic Purpose

As a result of liberalization which commenced in1997, Sri Lanaka is now passing a traditional period from government controlled industry to free market orientation industry, from a satisfying inland demand to international demand and from traditional agricultural predominance to industrialization. Consequently Sri Lankan organizations re increasingly subject to pressures for strategic change to meet demand for improved quality, flexibility, commitment, cost-effectiveness and better productivity. A focus here is the creation and maintenance of the more highly competent, adaptable and content workforce which gives a maximum contribution contribution to organizational efficiency, effectiveness and productivity. As a consequence, there is a need for greater expertise in Human Resources Management. The generic purpose of B.Sc. HRM (Special) degree is to create a pool of  graduates  of high caliber in the field of Human Resources Management which contributes to success and progress of success of the organizations in private and public sectors and then toward national development of Sri Lanka.

 

Programme Objective

1. To provide the modern academic knowledge, skills and attitude of HRM

2. To provide graduate with insights into the currant practice of HRM

3. To provide general understanding of the organizational management

4. To provide frameworks for understanding of the various aspects of HRM

5. To provide firm foundation upon which to further study of HRM

6. To help students develop a range of competencies in understanding human nature and with particular reference to the human behavior at work.

7. To upgrade the traditional personal management to the HRM students in line with trends in modern management studies to help in formation of dynamic, well informed and productive workforce.

 

Programme Structure

The degree is four year special degree providing increasing specialization in HRM commencing, from the second year upto final year (throughout three years). Students have to study 27 subjects including practical training. Following figure indicates the structure of the degree.

 

Teaching/Development Methodology

It involves:

i. Class room teaching through lecture method and academic assignments for learning of theories, policies, systems, approaches, methods and techniques.

ii. Practical learning for providing exposure to real world of management of management of human recourse through practical training, practical assignments, independent project, case studies, role plays and simulations.

 

Proposed Changes to the Existing Programme

1. Introduce Industrial law and Industrial Relations as separate two subjects.

2. Include the following three subjects in the final year:

    - Advanced HRM

    - International HRM including Management of Expatriates

    - Total quality and Human Resources.

3. Include the subject- Administrative management instead of office management so as to cover areas such as administration of personnel records, administration of EPF & ETF matters, attendance records etc.

4. Amalgamate Micro Economics and Macro Economics as one subject titled Economics (In order to reduce the number of subjects for including more important specialist subjects of HRM)

5. Include reward Management instead of Compensation management.
