Steven began arriving home from work later and later each evening. He told himself that he needed the overtime when in reality he was prolonging his going home because of Tamara and her constant complaining. He was not sure just how much more he could take. She wouldn't attend any of the many functions to which they were invited...she was neglecting her appearance...turning into someone he no longer knew. He would find himself looking around the office at the smiling faces of the women who worked there. They looked so capable! Feeling disloyal to Tamara, he would quickly look away and try to concentrate on his work. He hoped Tamara would soon find the help she needed...for both their sakes. He needed a loving wife, not the cold stranger who lay beside him each night.

For several days, Steven had given a ride home to a co-worker who lived a few blocks from his home. Her car was being serviced and he was glad for the company on the long drive. Beth was in the midst of a custody battle and they talked of that as they drove through the busy streets. Before long, Steven was talking about Tamara and his home life. They were both sympathetic toward each other's problems and wished each other luck in sorting them out.

He realized one morning that Beth hadn't been at work for several days. When he inquired, he was told she was ill. As he made his way home that evening, he stopped at her apartment to see if there was anything he could do for her and was dismayed when she burst into tears, telling him she had lost custody of her daughter. Steven held her, trying to soothe her. She finally got control of herself and as they sat across from each other drinking coffee, Steven felt a strong attraction for this woman whom he had known such a short time. He quickly excused himself and left.

Beth returned to work several days later and although Steven fought his attraction, he found himself thinking about her constantly. He knew he was courting disaster but seemed to have no power to curb the feelings that were coursing inside him. They had lunch several times and went out together to dinner once or twice a week. Beth was so warm and understanding. And he needed that. He knew Tamara loved him but her love was smothering him, keeping him imprisoned. He knew how crushed she would be if she discovered he was seeing another woman so he took every precaution to make sure this wouldn't happen. But Fate had other plans for Steven and his affair was soon to be discovered...
