The purpose of the unorganized militia is to protect life, liberty, community, local, state, & national infrastructure & to assist the lawful authorities of the state & nation in time of crisis.

Headquarters Newaygo County Michigan 8th Brigade 5th Division is responsible for the organizing, training & supervision of the brigade.

Headquarters Newaygo County Michigan 8th Brigade 5th Division is also tasked with coordinating training & the actions of our units within the 8th Brigade with those of the other Brigade Headquarters within MILITIA 5th Division MI. Decision for our Brigade units to operate out of the MILITIA 5th Division MI counties is made by the 5th Division
Commander and staff.

All of Michigan`s 83 counties are identified as a Brigade regardless of size with tactical organization varying in each MILITIA Brigade.
Brigade means "A tactical unit & administrative unit composed of a headquarters with supporting units."
Each of the 83 MILITIA Brigades in Michigan is commanded by a Major -
Lt Colonel in the MILITIA rank system. The 83 MILITIA Brigades are organized into 9 MILITIA Divisions each MILITIA Division is commanded by a Colonel in the MILITIA rank system.

9 MILITIA Divisions also known as MILITIA Corps are commanded by a State Command.

Newaygo County Michigan 8th Brigade 5th Division is compromised of able bodied citizens 18 - 60 years of age from Newaygo County MI.

All members are required to purchase & maintain their own rifles, ammo, uniforms & equipment. Members attend one 4 hour meeting & one 24 hour meeting a month at Level 1 & 2.

4 hour training sessions are conducted the 2nd Thursday of each month 5 - 9 pm. 24 hour training sessions are conducted on the 2nd weekend of each month Saturday 1200 - Sunday 1200. Call ahead or e-mail for the meeting training locations as it varies each month.
Members may/can host meeting/training locations to assist the MILITIA in training/developing plans to assist member(s) in defending their property(s).

To qualify Level 1 members are required to have their Level 1 uniforms/equipment, be able to hike 2 miles within 40 minutes in uniform with their equipment, shoot
8 out of 10 shots in a 9 inch target at 100 yards with their personal weapon, demonstrate the ability to field strip & clean their personal weapon.

Members are trained to operate as 2 man rifle teams & 4 man fire teams within their section, rifle platoon, rifle company & brigade. Members are taught marksmanship, camouflage, concealment, cover, observation, individual team movement, land navigation, tracking, communication, reporting, first aid, survival camping, patrolling, defensive offensive tactics, mission planning & employment.

This is NOT an official website NOR is it endorsed or maintained by the US GOV, State of MI, or local government(s) in MI.
Small Unit Training is conducted year around. Training this winter will include methods & practice of winter travel, fire starting, water purification resupply, use of 4 season tents, improvised shelter construction, base camp operations, secuirty, team tactics, scouting & patrolling. Emphasis will be placed on use of 4 season tents, construction of improvised shelters to help conceal, protect the teams from observation & the elements. Bring your overwhites, snowshoes, sled, saw, snow shovel, sleeping bag, & small stoves w/fuel. Members with white camouflage netting, 4 season tents & snowmobiles are encouraged to bring them for security, safety, supply reasons. Even with the light winters over the last couple of years it is prefered that members purchase snowshoes. 24 hour Training is conducted on the 2nd weekend of the month Saturday noon - Sunday noon.
