Kivas were built right into the walls of the village. This is an open kiva. Traditional kivas had a roof made of logs and the same mud used for building the city. The enterance was a hole in the roof where a ladder was used to climb dowm into the kiva.

Looking down into a kiva. The small hole by the large hole was where the Anasazi believed the spirits of the earth would pass through. This small hole is called a sipapu.
