Treasure, Luke 12:33-34
"Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Jesus had just told the disciples that they should not seek after what they shall eat or drink, nor be doubtful of mind, because these are the things the world seeks after, and our Father in heaven knows we have need of such things. God knows we need food, and He knows we need clothing and housing and such in order to survive. And He has promised to provide all those things if we seek first His kingdom, and His righteousness. When we devote ourselves to the things of God, we do not end up lacking in material possessions, but rather, we end up greatly abounding in spiritual blessings and in addition have all our physical needs met without our having to worry ourselves over them.
Having said this, Jesus tells them to sell all that they have and give to those who are in need, and then to provide themselves with bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens which will not become corrupted by moths nor stolen by thieves. He's not telling them to sell what they have to they can buy really good quality money bags with the money they earn from the sales-- He tells them to give that money to those in need (giving alms). What Jesus is telling them to do is to detatch themselves from their material possessions and focus on the rewards they will have in heaven for having done the will of God: treasure in heaven.
The treasure we store up for ourselves in heaven is different from the treasures we can attain here on earth. On earth, we toil and work to earn money to buy things and then we have to worry about keeping them in working condition, making sure they look nice, and guarding against those treasures being stolen or corrupted by pests and such. But when we do not concern ourselves with treasure on earth, but in heaven, we are free from such worries and anxieties. Our treasure in heaven is permanent and eternal, and is far more pleasant than that which we have on earth. No one can steal it, no bugs can get to it, and it doesn't become a burden to us in trying to maintain it.
Jesus Christ, God, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, has risen and is seated at the right hand of God. He is to be the love of our lives, for He has said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength," and, "You shall have no other gods before Me." Our treasure is in heaven if we have fallen in love with Jesus Christ-- for He presently resides in heaven. We long to be there, for He is there. He is our Savior, our all in all, our everything. Without Him, we are nothing. And the great desire of every Christian is to see Jesus, face to face, and to behold His beauty and majesty, worshiping at His feet for all eternity in praise and adoration.
