A block party of bears by Debora Hoffmann

Fun Fur Facts

A Bear by Any Other Name...

Debora has always been fascinated by other languages--and by teddy bears, too. She has compiled a list of words for "bear" in languages other than English. If you would like to add to the list, please send an e-mail.

Afrikaans: beer
Danish: bjørn
Dutch: beer
French: ours
Frisian: bear
German: Bär (also written Baer)
Greek: arkoutha*
Italian: orso
Japanese: kuma (also used in combinations as guma)
Latin: ursus
Norwegian: bjørn
Portuguese: urso
Russian: медведь (pronounced myedvyed)
Spanish: oso
Swedish: björn

Debora enjoys seeing the similarities in words from different languages. She speaks a little bit of German (ein bichen Deutsch) as well as a smattering of Spanish (un poquito espaol), both culled from language courses at school and speaking with native speakers. If you speak one of these languages, you can e-mail Debora and she'll attempt to write back to you in that language.

Update: Debora is now learning Russian, albeit slowly. She says привет (privyet [hi]) to you all!

*Thanks to Michelle Papadakis from Greece for supplying the Greek word for "bear"!
