Of Life in Gush Katif - Scene 1 |
[In the kitchen, the mother is preparing for dinner. In the bedroom, Tamar-the daughter, and a friend are doing history homework.]
Mother: "Two more forks and the table is set." [Bustles round the table and lays the forks]. Tamar: "Fine, mother. We've almost finished our homework." [Turns to her friend, Rachel] "O.k. the last question on the page: "Would Judea still have fallen even if all the Jews had been united in the rebellion against Rome? Discuss." Hmm. I don't know. What do you think, Rachel?" Rachel: [thoughtfully chews her pencil and gazes dreamily in the air] "They might have had a chance; all the Jews fighting together. We know that they had enough food in Jerusalem to last for several years, only the Zealots burned it all up" [Trails off] Tamar: "No way! We are talking about the Romans! Huge empire, thousands of skilled soldiers!! Rachel: [calmly] "Remember Chanukah? Peasants with shovels and rakes against the incredible Greek army? Miracles CAN happen!" Tamar: "But you don't know for sure that a miracle like that would have happened again." Rachel: "I don't know for sure. But if all the Jews had been united, perhaps HaShem would have caused a miracle in the merit of the unity." Tamar: "Perhaps." ***** DANCE: ROMANS/ JEWS ****** Rachel: [closes notebook with a flourish] "There, I've finished." Tamar: "Me too. Let's go eat dinner." [Go to kitchen] Mother: "I hope you girls remember that tomorrow is the anniversary of Miri Amitai HYD, your teacher who was killed on the K'far Darom school bus. Rachel: "Yes, we remember. The Ulpana has been planning the ceremony tomorrow for the past month! Several girls wrote songs, speeches" Mother: "Well, dears, don't forget to wear white shirts tomorrow." Tamar & Rachel: "Don't worry. We'll remember." Rachel: [looks at clock] "Um, I have to go home now. Thank you for the dinner it was very good. Bye, Tamar, see you at school tomorrow." Tamar: "Bye." |
