I know...

"Morning shall be, or evening or noon
When someone will also take my soul from me to Ares."
(Homer, Illus 21,111).

I know: a day shall come or night,
I'll fall alone, on the battle ground dying;
And around me will be deadly animals I can't fight:
The desert, death and heat are around me lying.

But how sweet death shall be on the battle ground,
How tasty what waits for me in the barren pit,
When my eyes   wandering in a valley of darkness newly found
Will see the torches of victory lit.
