Week 5: Jets vs Dolphins

This is an important game ofr my Jets for a couple of reasons. First of all, the Dolphins and Jets are heated rivals, so beating Miami would mean alot to the season. But more important is the fact that Miami is el numero uno in the league right now, so beating them would put me back into the hunt. Of course this is easier said than done, what with Dan Marino's lighting fast arm and Miami's great corps of receivers. Safeties Louis Oliver and Jarvis Williams are going to cause problems for my receivers, so I'm benching an in "bad" condition Ken O.Brien for an "excellent" Tony Eason. Maybe Blair will act like the first round pick the Jets expected him to be and I won't have to worry about throwing. And maybe Michael Irvin will lay off the coke. Just maybe.

I never thought I'd see the day when defenders
were falling all over themselves chasing McNeil.

1st Quarter

I run Blair 3 times in a row but fall short of the marker, so I punt. After a great return into Jets territory, the Dolphins disregard their passing game and grind it out with Tony Paige and get to the 28 yard line. Sammie Smith finds a hole up the middle (Byrd? Clifton? Hello?) and gets caught from behind at the 1. Paige then walks into the endzone despite a picked play. Meanwhile, I go 3-and-out again. 7-0 Dolphins.

2nd Quarter

The quarter starts with 2 Kyle Clifton sacks via picked plays and a punt returned to the Jets' 38. On 2nd down, Eason gets things started with a 30-yard pass to Al Toon and then a 29-yarder to Freeman McNeil. From the 2, McNeil jams it in for

I just love those flying bodies.
the touchdown. After the kickoff, I pick his pass play yet again and Jeff Lageman gets the sack. On 3rd down, Marino gets his first pass to "Perry" Ferrell Edmunds, but he's short, so they boot it downfield. After that, Eason guns a pass to Mark Boyer, but he coughs it up and the 'Phins have it at the 40 with 1 second left. Pete Stoyanovic lines up for the field goal, but his kick is wide left.

Halftime; tied at 7.

They're just messing with my head. That's got to be the only reason they've only completed 1 pass. I mean, this is the Miami Dolphins here. Besides that though, my defense did a damn good job in the 2nd quarter.

3rd Quarter

Despite getting sacked twice by Clifton again, Marino leads the charge to midfield.

I can't think of anything snappy to say about
the guy on the 7. He just looks winded.

Miami finishes the drive with a 39-yard leaping catch and run from Mark Duper good for 6. However, not too much later, Eason finds a leaping Rob Moore for a 52-yard touchdown to tie it up again. Things continue to go sour for the Dolphins as Mark Clayton fumbles a 20-yard catch at the 43. Possession looked questionable, but I don't care because I have the ball back. Tied at 14.

4th Quarter

On 3rd and 2, Thomas scampers for a gain of 15 and a first down to bring me into the red zone. On the next play, Eason throws a 12-yard strike to McNeil for his 2nd TD. Oh, but I'm not done yet...oh no sir. Mark McMillan joins the party as he picks off a pass intended for Clayton at the 24. With the lead, I pound the ball to run down the clock, and Thomas and McNeil oblige as they take my team down to the 36. From there Thomas busts a huge run and puts it in the endzone to put the 'Phins away. After that, Smith gets a big run, but that's it.

Final

Wow, what a win. I think I finally put together a complete game. I ran well, my passing was effiecient, and my defense made some key stops. But that's one of the great things about coach mode: I can just call I bunch of plays and look like I did something. Um...I mean, I think my playcalling really helped. Yeah.

Player of the Game: Blair Thomas
9 carries 87 yards 1 touchdown

There were a number of players I could've this to. Freeman McNeil had 2 TDs, but I felt like he stumbled into those. Kyle Clifton had 4 sacks, but he and Dennis Byrd were terrible against the run. And while Tony Eason played better than Ken O.Brien did in 4 games, and wasn't a ground-breaking performance. Blair, I feel, worked for his yards--especially on the 36-yard touchdown. He wasn't necessarily the key to my win, but nobody was really. Needless to say, I'm surprised. Maybe their's hope for Michael Irvin after all. Just Maybe.

Notes: Well, looks like the NFC East is going back to normal now that Phoenix lost to the Pats and the G-Men pounded the Cowboys. Of course, Washington still looks bad, but they tend to do that from time to time. And Irvin needs to lay off the smack (okay, I'm done)...Poor Buffalo Bills. They can't catch a break. But I don't really feel sorry for them because somehow I know they'll screw me out of a playoff spot...With one fell swoop, the last undefeated and winless team breaks their respective streaks. Somewhere the '72 Dolphins and the '79 Bucs are celebrating (or maybe their 8-bit counterparts in some 1972 and 1979 Tecmo ROM hack)...I guess Andre Rison didn't help the Falcons all that much. Have a fun season, Glanville.
