Week 4: Jets vs Bears

The Chicago Bears are definately one of the toughest teams in the game. Running backs Neal Anderson and Brad Muster are both beasts, but the defense is much worse. The Bears are loaded with stars on defense, including but certainly not limited to ILB Mike Singletary and safety Mark "Stick Em" Carrier (not to be confused with the Bucs' WR Mark "Drop Em" Carrier). Needless to say, I probably won't be moving the ball.

At least the trainers didn't have to walk far.

1st Quarter

Even before Jim Harbaugh ambled onto the field, the excitement began as kick returner Johnny Bailey is carried off the turf (and by "excitement" I mean two people in the stands gasped). But the real action started when Anderson and "Colonel" Muster drove Chicago down the field, only to settle for a missed field goal after Scott Mersereau sacked Harbaugh on 3rd and 8. Ken O.Brien threw his first pass into the arms of Shaun Gayle, and Chicago had the ball back at their own 45. But once again, Chicago's attempts were thwarted as Kyle Clifton recorded the Jets' 3rd sack of the season and Kevin Butler shanked another kick. Tied at 0.

I think Dennis Byrd thinks it's a race and he's winning it.

2nd Quarter

Joe Prokop got the quarter started with a punt in the endzone. Neal ripped big run to the New York 34 and followed that up with another big run for a touchdown. After the kickoff, Ken O throws a bullet to Rob Moore for 43 yards, but Mike Singletary slammed the mispunctuated QB to the turf on 3rd down to force a Pat Leahy field goal. On the next drive, Neal brought them all the way to the Jets 34 again, but again Butler misses.

Halftime; 7-3 Chicago
I think by now Neal would be getting pretty mad at Kevin Butler. Ironically enough, I'm listening to "Full on Kevin's Mom" by Soundgarden, but Neal is probably going "full on" Kev like Larry Allen on Jose Cortez. But at any rate, I'm getting my ass kicked.

I can see a leap into the crowd coming.

3rd Quarter

After a decent return, O was sacked again, but Moore bailed him out on 3rd down. A few plays later Freeman McNeil scored on a 4-yard run to give me the lead. The Bears lost another kick returner on the ensuing kickoff, and Chicago went 3 and out with another Kyle Clifton sack. Pinned at my own 5, I had no choice but to run 3 crappy plays and punt it back. 14-10 Chicago.

4th Quarter

From their own 23, the Bears ran and threw (yes, there were some completions inthere) their way to 3, where Neal scored his second TD. Trace Armstrong's second sack forced a 4th and 13 with 1:38 left, and I had a decision to make. I went for it, but was rewarded with a blocked pass (damn that "Avoid Pass Block" stat). After the turnover on downs, Chicago drove down and Neal scored again with 5 seconds left.

Final

Well, this 2-game skid now takes me 2-2. Neal Anderson ran over my entire defense, Ken O.Brien just got ran over. 153 total yards is pathetic. Hopefully my team will do better next week when they face first place Miami.

Player of the Game: Neal Anderson
13 carries 211 yards 3 TDs

This is actually the first time I've given an oppenent a PotW award, but only because the rest of my team sucked so much ass. That said, 211 yards is amazing against any defense.

Week 4 notes: What happened to the ever-solid NFC East? Washington, Dallas, and the Giants are at the bottom with a 1-3 record, while Phoenix leads the division. Looks like things might get messy in week 17...Miami is the only undefeated team left, while the Green Bay Packers have somehow managed to be last winless team...How does Jay Shroeder become the top-rated passer this season? He didn't play that good in the first 4 weeks of my Raiders season...The Falcons had problems even with Andre Rison, but now that he's out, they are totally screwed. Have a fun season, Glanville.
