Himmler and the Occult

Possibly the most powerful figure in the Third Reich after Hitler was Himmler - son of a Roman Catholic teacher and originally a devout Catholic. Himmler saw his SS as a brotherhood and continuation of the 12th century Order of the Teutonic Knights, he saw the men in this brotherhood as the reincarnations of Teutonic knights of antiquity, as well the knights of King Arthur's round table.

Himmler reportedly believed himself to be the reincarnation of Saxon King Heinrich I "The Fowler", first king of the medieval German state who united the German tribes into in a short lived kingdom, and protected Germany from Eastern invaders , as portrayed in  Wagner's Lohengrin opera.

King Arthur incidentally was not of the Teutonic knights, his connection to the Grail legend combined with convoluted Nazi logic seized upon the old Welsh / English legend and adopted it as 'Aryan'.

Wewelsburg Castle

Nazi Occult Spiritual Center

Wewelsburg Castle was acquired by Himmler in 1934 when he signed a 100-mark 100-year lease , intending to renovate and redesign the castle as an SS School. But he became intrigued with the Castle and developed further plans for it, eventually it was to become "The Center of the World" in the Nazi SS religion .

During the Dark ages and inquisition, Wewelsburg played a central role in the witchcraft trials . The persecution of 'witches' was cruel and barbaric in many regions of Germany. Scholars estimate that the number of 'witches' who perished at the stake was as high as 100,000. In Westphalia, women accused of witchcraft were held in the dungeons of Wewelsburg, confessions were extracted in Wewelsburgs courtroom. and most were sadistically executed on site.

This tradition continued when Himmler's restoration of the Castle began. A concentration camp was set up nearby for slave labor. Of the 3900 prisoners , nearly 1300 died , most were simply starved or worked to death.

That Himmler wanted Wewelsburg to serve as a 'Grail' castle is speculative and unsubstantiated. However, some rooms within the Castle referred to the Grail legend and Arthurian legends as well as other Pagan tales König Artus ("King Arthur") - Heinrich der Löwe - ("Henry the Lion") -Arier ("Aryan"), Runen ("runes"), Deutscher Orden ("Teutonic Order"), were among some of the names chosen for various rooms within the Castle.

The SS had twelve primary departments, each Department had a leader, each leader was said to be a member of the SS round table. Himmler at the helm of this round table made a complete coven of 13.

At Wewelsburg Castle was Himmlers Round Table where the SS inner circle of 12 apostles or 'Gruppenführers' ,would meet dine and engage in occult rituals such as communicating with dead ancestors and Teutonic knights of the past.  Beneath the stone floor of the Arthurian Round Table was a small chamber known as the ‘realm of the dead’. This realm of the dead was meant to serve as the SS holy of holies, their Vatican, shang ri la, Mecca, basically the center of their universe, Wewelsburg Castle was to be the center of the World.

Himmler established festivals on the Summer and Winter Solstices based on ancient pagan rituals of sun and nature worship.

Himmler commissioned His personal occult advisor Karl Maria Wiligut , {sometimes known as “Himmler’s Rasputin”} ,to write private reports on Runes, ancient and esoteric Germanic traditions, and prehistory. After the First World War Wiligut performed as a Neopagan and claimed to be the last of a line of sorcerers called the Ueiskuinigsto and to have a clairvoyant recollection of the early Germanic history .

He met Himmler In 1933 and was appointed to the "SS Race and Settlement Main Department". He designed the "Totenkopf" [deaths head] ring, which Himmler personally awarded to prestigious SS officers. Himmler chose Wewelsburg to be the ritual headquarters of the SS based on the advice of Wiligut. Wiligut claimed to be an adherent of what he called "Irmin-Kristianity." which endorsed Lanz's belief in an Aryan Jesus.  [ The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany ]

Other Occult and Mystical Nazi Symbols included

The supreme talisman of National Socialism of course was the swastika,  an ancient symbol that can be traced back thousands of years.

The supreme talisman of the SS was the black dagger awarded to members upon full acceptance into the SS, it replaced the crucifix in in some respects.

A seventh century fertility symbol, the Black Sun (Schwarze Sonne) or Sun Wheel also ranked high within their symbolic lexicon. The Black Sun uses a twelve-spoke design , supposedly it represents the visible sun on its passage through the twelve months of the year Black Sun: Aryan Cults, Esoteric Nazism, and the Politics of Identity , but a myriad of other symbolic references have been attested to and or implied.

"a grand force or a grand god in the background of the multiplicity of gods and spirits who becomes visible in a multiple way in the universe, on earth and in the life of all beings and facts". So the sun was interpreted as "only one, but a very important and big expression (of that force or god) in the surrounding events and in the life of the ancestors"   Walther Blachetta : Das Buch der deutschen Sinnzeichen (The book of German sense characters - out of print limited availability)

The SS-Ehrenring ("Honor Ring"), commonly referred to as  Totenkopf ring  or Deaths Head Ring was an award of Heinrich Himmler's SS. It wasn't a state decoration, but exclusive to the SS, it was a personal gift from Himmler.  In 1938 Himmler ordered the death's head rings of dead SS-men and officers returned. They were to be stored in a chest in the castle symbolizing the ongoing membership of the deceased in the SS-Order[The Occult Roots of Nazism: Secret Aryan Cults and Their Influence on Nazi Ideology ] . The whereabouts of over 11,000 rings after the Second World War is unknown.

Much of Nazi symbolism was derived from ancient Nordic Runes. The Nazis modernized and stylized them. The SS symbol, the double lightning bolt, is a stylized version of the Sig rune {Sieg}  drawn from the Wiligut runes [Karl Maria Wilgut]
