The Ghost in the Shell Characters

Major Motoko Kusanagi
Kusanagi is the sexy main character of the story. She is the number two in Security Police Section 9, answering to Aramaki. Background info on her is very sketchy. There is a theory she may have been in military service and prior to this she was with the the Special Maneuver Team of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Kusanagi is directly in charge of both Bateau and Togusa.
Kusanagi has had her body changed to a cybernetic one. The only part of her that is not cybernetic is a part of her brain which was taken from her original body. Her sub-brain is capable of accessing all types of computer network on the planet. Kusanagi's age is unknown, her cybernetic body is that of a woman in her early 20's, however Kusanagi's age is thought to be closer to 40.
The appearance of the "Puppet Master" has effected Kusanagi deeply in that there seems to be some kind of connection between them. This also leads her to doubt that she even has a ghost (or soul).

Bateau
Bateau has been Kusanagi's partner for several years in Section 9. His role is not just as her partner but he is also a "steadying" force to ensure she doesn't cross the line and go too far (which she sometimes does).

Aramaki
Aramaki is the chief of Section 9.  He has the unique abilities to be able to control both Kasanagi and Bateau.  He has been the chief for many years and prefers to get the job done (even if it means getting his hands dirty himself) than get involved in section politics.

Togusa
Togusa was plucked by Kusanagi, from the Police Department, to Section 9. He is still considered a rookie as he has not been with Section 9 for long. He is married and in his late 20's. He is mostly original, ie he is still mainly human and therefore is also considered to be an outsider by other members of Section 9. Togusa is also a bit of a loose cannon. Breaking with tradition in Section 9 by not equiping himself with the standard firearms but instead using his favourite "classic" shooter.

Ishikawa
The oldest member of Section 9 except for Aramaki. He is relied upon to keep his cool in his crisis.

Nakamura
Nakamura is the chief of Security Police Section 6, Ministry of Foreign Affairs treaty ratification division.  Since the Puppet Master incident, Nakamura launched a secret operation, to try and out maneuver Section 9.

The Puppet Master
The Puppet Master is actually a program developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their diplomatic conspiracy work. The offical codename of the Puppet Master is "Project 2501". The Puppet Master can access any databases and programs and is connected to every computer network in the world.  The Puppet Master has been responsible for computer related crime involving hacking into peoples "ghosts" and altering their memories. Using these hacked victims the Puppet Master then instructs them to perform tasks for him. Since hacking into various databases the Puppet Master reached sentience and claimed itself to be a true lifeform.

Willis
The chief manager of Project 2501's development team. Willis feels sympathetic towards the Puppet Master and is one of a few people who can understand him.
