Lesson 1
What is Defense Against the Dark Arts?

The class couldn't stop chattering. They finally had a new Defense Against the Dark Arts Prof. Everyone wondered who the new teacher could be. There was an empty chair at the staff table this morning, again, but they were told to report to the classroom anyways. The students at the front of the room gasped. A lady had apeared out of nowhere!

"Good morning," said the strange lady. "For those of you who are too stunned to guess, I am your new teacher. You may call me Prof. Karia. Here is a quick list of rules that you would be wise not to forget:

  1. Do not talk while I am talking.
  2. Do not be late.
Follow those 2 rules and I promise to try to make this class fun. Now, I thought that it would be a good idea if we started of our lessons together with one about what Defense Against the Dark Arts really is. To simplify things, I will simply use DADA from now on. Does anyone have a guess? Yes, Slytherin student in the back."

"It is what it sounds like, learning how to defend ourselves against the dark arts, ma'am," he said confidently.

Prof. Karia smiled. "Yes, that does answer the question that I asked. I guess I need to be a little more specific in my questions in order for you to have a chance to give me the answer I'm looking for. Slytherin may have the 5 points since you did answer the question that I asked. Now, what are the Dark Arts?"

"Magic that can be morally questionable, that can take a liberty such as self-control away from another, or magic that can cause harm of any kind to another being!"

"3rd rule, raise your hand and wait untill I call on you before you answer. That was correct by the way Ravenclaw. There are 3 broad ways to classify something that is considered dark. Some things in our world are obviously evil in nature, some things are more questionable, and for others, it depends on the person weilding the magic."

The bell rang causing the class to jump. "That is all for today. I will collect your homework before the next lesson, and I while not accept excuses like, 'My dragon ate my homework!'"
