Showing the Neapolitan Mastiff is expensive and requires time and
money to travel. Neapolitans are not accepted at "Recognized" AKC shows.
Neo's are shown at shows put on by Rare breed associations such as American
Rare Breed Association (ARBA). They are not as many Rare Breed shows in
a years time like the more recognized clubs like AKC. Each organization
has there own rules and regulations and there is a specific system for
judging dogs and awarding points towards obtaining a championship.

Alot of preparation is required ahead of time when showing a Neapolitan
Mastiff. Having a LARGE car or van or suburban is a good thing when
owning a Neapolitan Mastiff. You will need a car big enough to fit your
dog(s) and all of their things needed for the show. In addition to Crates,
Dogs, Water, leashes, show leads, towels, chairs and You may need to bring
dog food and dishes depending on the amount of days spent on the road and
days at the show. Take plenty of water with you for the dog(s). You will
use it the most at the show.

From experience you will want to park your vehicle in the shade. The
heat really takes it's toll on the Neo. Finding shade trees or having an
awning is good to take as well. ( Bring your own shade) It is important
to have your dog(s) under the shade with plenty of water for them to drink.
Neo's have died on the show grounds from lack of water and heat!

Training your Neo from the moment he/she gets home, You will need
to train him/her to allow a stranger (judge) to touch the dog, and look
at his/her teeth. You will need to teach the dog to gait properly around
the show ring. Practice a couple times a week or more to perfect your handling
technique and the dogs presentation. Because of the transformations the
neo grows through, you may not win shows at first with your pup, because
the neo really is not impressive until at least 2 years of age. In the
mean time it is good to enter him/her in shows for the goodness of the
experience. Helping the neo learn that shows are routine may help him/her
to like the show atmosphere.

Make sure your Neo(s) have gotten a good nights sleep the night before
the show. If you are traveling it is wise not to feed your
Neo the evening before the show. Some shows are held indoors some outside,
make sure you know, or make preparations to be either indoors or outdoors,
It is wise to get weather reports of the location you are going, Once on
the show grounds it is wise to place your "camp" away from dogs that
may look like problem dogs. Neo's are sensitive to barking dogs and lots
of action around them and may key on dogs barking at each other and your
Neo may take charge to find out what is going on with the barking dogs.
So it is wise to keep your Neo on a leash at all times. Be on guard of
what is going on around you at all times. |
