Story: Kanto

[I don't have a character in this area, but I'm sure I'll get something from DS or someone.  Come back later!]

Story: Borto

Chapter 1: A Wall, Earth, and Other Hard Things

Our story in the world of Borto starts in Birth Town with a girl named Ashley Ketchum.  Yes, she's the twin brother of Ash Ketchum, but neither knows of the other's existence, which makes this story plausible.  Our heroine is late to get her first Pokémon, and in her rush collides into a wall.  Prof. Cherry concedes that the main Pokémon is already gone, but pulls a Pikachu out of storage and gives it to her with the usual starter materials, as well as a PokéNav.  She nicknames the Pikachu to Sparky, and sets out on Route 201.  She is soon ambushed by an Admin of Team Earth named Sarah, who is own3d royally.  After Cherry brings her back to recover from the damage she took, she was taken to Serenity Town without major incident.  She proceeds to crash into a girl named Sovia Luna who is also on a journey to become the Champion.  She decides to join Ashley.

---

Chapter 2: Heart of Ice

As the two girls move on, they are attacked by two wild Pokémon, which Ashley is quick to snatch up: a Taillow and a Sentret.  They move on into the Ice Slide, which is famous for its everlasting challenge of sliding down while standing.  Sovia simply rides it down like some kind of fair slide, but Ashley glides down on her sandals.  After an eventful ride, she reaches the bottom, and is the first to ever do so.  A Slowking comes out and talks to her about its Trainer, who is encased in this wall of ice, and thanks her for setting it free, giving her a Radio Card for her PokéNav.  They then finish the walk to Dawn City.

---

Chapter 3: Death by Darkness

The main attraction of Dawn City is the first Pokémon Gym.  The two girls head inside and take on the Leader, Eric, who commands bird Pokémon.  Sovia beats him with little trouble, but when Ashley's battle is halfway over, Eric turns ugly by letting out his dark streak - literally.  Eric happens to be a Shadow Trainer, and his Pidgeotto is a Shadow Pokémon.  Ashley struggles to stay alive, her Pikachu and Sovia both suffering injuries, but Ashley finds a tool to help her: the Snag Machine, now in portable form as a glove.  She uses it to catch Eric's Pokémon, and then begins to dodge incoming objects that Eric is throwing.  A Jenny appears to arrest him, but Eric is unwilling to part with the darkness until a few choice shots from Jenny's Growlithe settle the score.  Ashley and the Jenny take Eric to the Pokémon Center for medical care, followed by Pikachu and Sovia.  They rest for a long time, Ashley having retrieved her Wing Badge before leaving.  When they prep to leave the next day, they meet up with Trenton, a Team Earth Grunt with a liking to battling strong Trainers.  He battles Ashley to a draw, and they return to the Pokémon Center, Trenton joining the girls on their quest.

Glossary

Notes on using: The term itself is in bold in its own entry, and a term used in a different entry is in italics.  Firefox users can add this as a QuickSearch Bookmark: use the Location "http://www.geocities.com/neo14789/psaviors.htm#%s" (DO NOT CLICK!), and the Keyword "psaviors".  Then type "psaviors <term>" in your address bar, and Firefox will jump to "term" in this glossary.  Note that, since Firefox is W3C compliant unlike IE, you'll need to use the proper case to get to the item. ("Badge" works, "badge" does not.)

Ability - A special skill a Trainer has.  Some are preset by character, and many others can be purchased with TXP in the Shop.

Active state - The battle state in which a Trainer is actually battling other Trainers or Pokémon.  Trainers in this state take the most damage.  A Trainer in the ready state becomes active when they join the battle.

Attract - A status condition that affects Pokémon.  Target falls in love with a certain Pokémon, and has a good chance of failing to execute a battle action against it.  Cure with Red Flute, switching, or Ability.

Badge - Proof of your victory over its corresponding Gym.  Each country has eight of these, and all of them are needed to enter its Pokémon League.

Battle action - Anything a Trainer does in a battle, like ordering an attack or using an item.  Generally, only Trainers in the active state can use these.

Battle Mode OFF - BM OFF for short.  Indicates the end of a Pokémon Battle started with Battle Mode ON.

Battle Mode ON - BM ON for short.  Indicates the start of a Pokémon Battle, whether against Trainers, evil Teams, or just a wild Pokémon.  End this state with Battle Mode OFF.

Battle state - Describes how involved a Trainer is in a battle.  The states are freelance, ready, or active, in order from least damage taken to most.

Berserk - A status condition that affects Trainers.  The afflicted Trainer can't order any battle action besides attacking.  A Trainer with berserk takes more damage from attacks.  Cure with own or ally's Ability.  Will eventually cure itself.

Burn - A status condition that affects Pokémon.  Decreases Attack power and saps HP over time.  Cure with Burn Heal, Full Heal or equiv., Refresh, Heal Bell, or an Ability.

Call - A battle action.  Nulls the sleep condition and ends Hyper Mode.

Champion - The top Trainer in a country.  One area's Champion is likely not the same as another's.  They are always the person to beat at the end of the Pokémon League.

Confuse - A status condition that affects Pokémon.  When the Pokémon tries to perform a battle action that involves it, it has a chance of attacking itself, dealing minor damage.  Cure with a Yellow Flute, switching, or an Ability.  Will eventually cure itself.

Dark Aura - The eerie glow that Shadow Pokémon and Shadow Trainers emit.  Only the select few Shadow Saviors can see it.

Down - A status condition that affects Trainers.  Occurs when a character has exactly zero THP left.  In this state, a Trainer can't give commands to Pokémon under their control, can't recall Pokémon, and can't change their battle state.  Another hit causes them to white out, but if they recover THP, they may rejoin the battle.  Usually occurs for Trainers in the active state.

Faint - A status condition that affects Pokémon.  A Pokémon enters this state when they have zero HP left (or less).  No energy is left to battle, and the target can't perform battle actions.  Cure with Revive or Ability.  If all of a Trainer's Pokémon have fainted, they leave battle.

Freelance state - The battle state in which a Trainer is not battling, nor will ever take part in this particular battle unless compelled by an outside force.  Freelance Trainers are able to do other things aside from battling, like using a door or keeping reconnaissance.  Trainers in this state take the least damage, if any at all.  A Trainer with no Pokémon is able to enter only this state.

Freeze - A status condition that affects Pokémon and Trainers.  The target is encased in a block of ice, preventing battle actions, except for Fire-type skills like Flamethrower or Ember.  Target is unable to move, and Trainers will lose THP while frozen.  Cure with Ice Heal, Full Heal or equiv., Fire-type skill, Heal Bell, or Ability.

Gym - There are eight of these in each country (that is, eight in Borto and eight in Kanto).  Each Gym is occupied by a Gym Leader, and in some cases, several of their cronies, the Gym Trainers.  In these Gyms, you may need to defeat one or more Gym Trainers to get to the Gym Leader.  Each Gym has a particular Pokémon type assigned to it, like Fire or Dark.  All of the Trainers, including the Leader, will use this Pokémon type.  (There are occasional exceptions to this rule, where  a Gym will not have a type.)  Beat the Gym Leader and you get the Badge for that Gym.  All eight Badges from a country are needed to enter its Pokémon League.

Gym Leader - Leader for short.  The head of a Gym.  Beat this Trainer and you get the Badge for that Gym.  The Leader usually has the toughest team in the Gym, so exercise caution!

Hyper Mode - This status condition is a special state of Shadow Pokémon.  In this state, a Pokémon will attack Trainers rather than the intended target Pokémon.  Some Trainers prefer to have their Pokémon in this state (Shadow Trainers), but the normal Trainer can call their Pokémon's name to bring it back to its senses.

Inventory - Any items you may possess.  For example, if you are given an object and told to give it to someone, it's placed in your inventory.  Your inventory usually isn't limited in size, and can fit a collapsible bike quite nicely.  Inventory items are generally stored in something like a backpack or belt pack.

Kill - Pokémon cannot be killed, except in VERY rare cases.  A Trainer can die if they take damage roughly equal to or greater than 20 times their max THP... but that rarely happens.  Certain happenings can also kill a Trainer, like falling off a cliff.

Life - see THP

OFF - see Battle Mode OFF

ON - see Battle Mode ON

Paralyze - A status condition that affects Pokémon.  Drastically cuts Speed and has a chance of preventing attacks.  Makes movement difficult.  Cure with Paralyz Heal, Full Heal or equiv., Refresh, Smellingsalt (deals damage), Heal Bell, or Ability.

Party - The group you're with.  If you're by yourself, you are your only party member.  If the entire party whites out, then you restart... somewhere.  But it's usually not a good thing. Try to have a large party at all times!

Party member - A member of a party.  A given character is exactly one member of a party.  If all party members have whited out or are down, then... bad stuff happens.  Avoid this at all costs!

Poison - A status condition that affects Pokémon.  Saps HP until the target faints.  Cure with Antidote, Full Heal or equiv., Refresh, Heal Bell, or Ability.

Pokémon League - When you have eight Badges from one area, you can take on its Pokémon League, which is a series of battles without access to a Pokémon Center or Poké Mart in between.  The last peg on the ladder is the Champion of that area.  Beat them to be declared the greatest Trainer in the land!

Ready state - The battle state in which a Trainer is waiting as backup for Trainers in the active state.  More able to evade damage, but can't send out Pokémon.

Shadow Pokémon - A Pokémon that has had the door to its heart artificially closed.  Team Earth appears to be tied to them somehow. Shadow Pokémon like to use their signature move Shadow Rush, may enter Hyper Mode and will only use Shadow Rush until the state is cured, and also tend to attack Trainers if they can.  A Shadow Pokémon can be returned to normal with use, love, and care.  Certain characters (Shadow Saviors) can identify them, and their matching Shadow Trainers, by their Dark Aura, and may then proceed to Snag them to help them recover.  (Want to see where this concept came from?  Play Pokémon Colosseum on the Nintendo Gamecube.)

Shadow Trainer - A Trainer of Shadow Pokémon.  Has a Dark Aura like the matching Shadow Pokémon.  These Trainers are unpredictable and may unleash an unstable fury at any time if provoked.

Shadow Savior - Someone who can see Dark Auras.  You must be one to be in Team Earth.

Shop - The second post in the RP.  Spend your TXP here on Abilities and upgrades to your THP and TMP.

Sleep - A status condition that affects Pokémon and Trainers.  Target is asleep and can't take battle actions, except for special Moves designed for use while asleep, like Snore or Sleep Talk.  Cure with Blue Flute, Awakening, Full Heal or equiv., Heal Bell, or Ability.  Will eventually cure itself.

Snag - The act of using the Snag Machine to catch a Trainer's Pokémon that is a Shadow Pokémon.

Status condition - An effect, usually negative, that affects a given target.  For Pokémon these include attract, burn, confuse, faint, freeze, paralyze, poison, and sleep; for Trainers, they include berserk, down, freeze, sleep, stun, and white out.

Stun - A status condition that affects Trainers.  Hinders movement and disables many battle actions. Cure with a Pokémon's Smellingsalt (deals damage) or Ability.  Will eventually cure itself... but this one takes a while.

Trainer eXperience Points - TXP for short.  You get these by winning battles, and you can spend them in the Shop.  Save lots up for powerful Abilities!

Trainer Hit Points - THP for short.  A numerical display of a Trainer's life force.  When it hits exactly zero, the Trainer is down; less than zero, and they white out.  Buy increases to this in the Shop.

Trainer Mana Points - TMP for short.  If you have a Trainer Attack, like Ember-T or Vine Whip-T, using it expends TMP. Defeating enemy Pokémon restores this.  Buy increases to this in the Shop.

White out - A status condition that affects Trainers.  Occurs when a Trainer would go below zero THP.  Trainer cannot perform battle actions, and his/her Pokémon stop battling to attend to the fallen Trainer.  If the entire party reaches this condition... bad stuff happens.
