| What is Legge Perthes Disease? |
|
|
| Legge Perthes Disease is a condition where the head of the thigh bone (femur) deteriorates due to insufficient blood supply to the area. This causes a flattening of the top of the femur (ball of the head of the femur). This wears out the hip socket and hip and shortens my legs. This occurs most frequently in boys 4-10 years old. I was diagnosed when I was 6 years old. It is common in low birth weight babies, which I was. It occurs 4-5 times more often in boys than girls. |

When I was 6 years old I started to limp. We found out that I have a condition called Legge Perthes Disease.
I had several surgeries while I was young and spent a year in a body cast. I also spent a lot of time at Primary Children's Medical Center, where I met Donny and Marie Osmond one day. I was told that I would eventually have to have my hips replaced, but not until I was much older. It has mainly affected my right him, but it is also in my left hip. |

Total Hip Replacement |

| What is a total hip replacement? |
|
|
| A total hip replacement is a surgical procedure where the diseased bone of the hip joint is surgically replaced with an artificial bone, ball, and socket joint. My bone and joint are made of titanium steel. My new ball and socket joint are ceramic and are all that will have to be replaced in the future. |

| My experience with total hip replacement |

| Due to the accident we were in before we got married, my right hip replacement came earlier than planned. It happened in October, 1995. I was told that when this hip is replaced in 10-15 years I will probably have to have my left hip replaced. |

Kidney |
|
After being in our accident before getting married, we found that I was only born with one functioning kidney and it was damaged in the accident. We were quite surprised that during all of my hospitalizations when I was younger they had never found this out.
I have to have my kidney checked regularly to make sure that there are no blockages and that everything is okay with it. I have had 3 or 4 surgeries on it so far and am told that it is only functioning at about 70%. But, you can live with only 30% of one kidney. I have to be careful not to be bumped or jarred too hard in that area because it can cause more problems with the kidney. |
