We at the City of Negaunee Volunteer Fire Department care about your safety and welfare. Fires are dangerous situations and there are a number of things you can do to help the fire department keep you, your family and your property safe. Please take note of the following... Number Your Homes The Negaunee City Fire Department asks that all residents mark their homes with the correct street address in a highly visable area. Often times it is difficult for responding personnel to locate your house number, especially in those areas which are more wooded or at night. We ask that your house numbers be prominently posted and or lit up at night so that our fire units can respond in the most timely fashion. Dial 9-1-1 for Fire / Medical Assistance / or Police 9-1-1...these are the only numbers you need to remember in an emergency (threat to life or property). Marquette County Central Dispatch uses an enhanced 9-1-1 system that provides dispatch personnel with your address and phone number immediatley upon your connection. Enhanced 9-1-1 is an extremely efficient system that will help to protect you. For non-emergency needs, please DO NOT dial 9-1-1. Utilize your business office numbers listed in your phone book. Carbon Monoxide Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, tasteless gas that is a silent killer. Most victims of Carbon Monoxide poisioning are not even aware of it, until it is too late. The Negaunee City Fire Department recommends that each home be outfitted with a carbon monoxide detector in addition to your regular smoke detectors, in every room. If your carbon monoxide detector is activated, the NVFD suggests you leave the house immediately and dial 9-1-1 especially if you or any members of your family begin to feel ill. The NVFD does not respond to carbon monoxide incidents. SEMCO Energy is equipped to monitor your household in the event your detector goes into alarm. Burning Permits Burning Permits are required for ALL types of burning done within the city limits (including the Coleman-type yard burners). Permits may be obtained by the public by visiting the Fire Department Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. or by appointment by phoning 906.475.9811. If you do plan to burn, we suggest notifying the Negaunee City Police Department before doing so as to avoid false alarm fire reports. Those that wish to burn outside the city limits, you must first contact your township Fire Marshall or the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). You must contact the DNR before you begin burning to avoid false alarm reports. Unauthorized burning within or outside of the Negaunee City Limits is prohibited by law and may result in fines and or services charges. |
