In memory of Selva - Masters of the Universe
From : fellow Masters of the Universe - Nick, Tim, Miang, Kay Khng + Tio

No account of Selva would be complete without a mention in passing of his
early UBS days as a  "Masters of the Universe".

We got together in the late 1980s / early 1990s to form the Off Balance
Sheet Trading Desk in UBS Singapore.  We are proud to say that we stood
shoulder to shoulder with Selva in the early 1990s;  days of glory too
easily achieved followed by immediate spectacular failure as often occurs
when success comes early to young traders who have not learnt how to deal
with setbacks. Through this roller coaster period, the lifelong bonds of
our friendship was forged and cemented. Truly a giant among friends, we
count Selva as one of the highlights of our life. He taught us to laugh and
to laugh hard. We laughed at each other, we laughed at others, we laughed
at ourselves - in short, we laughed a lot at the world, no matter what .
Way before the Real Madrid football philosophy  was in vogue, we were
already expert practitioners at laughing back at the world twice as hard as
the world made us cry. When we think of him, its is his infectious laughter
that we miss above all else.

Farewell Selva - our friend, our brother, our fellow Masters of the
Universe. You will live in our hearts forever.
This is a poem by Carl Sandburg that I shared with Selva in Feb 2004 that he particularly
liked. He was then going through the pain of letting someone go. To those
of us who grieve his passing, I share this with you now. Know that this was
a poem that meant a lot to him.

Stars, Songs, Faces

Gather the stars if you wish it so.
Gather the songs and keep them.
Gather the faces of women.
Gather for keeping years and years.
     And then . . .
Loosen your hands, let go and say goodbye.
Let the stars and songs go.
Let the faces and years go.
Loosen your hands and say goodbye.

A group of his hostel kakis got together to place an obituary in the straits times today.

We hope you can upload to the website set up in Selva's memory.
I apologise for the poor reproduction quality as it was a cut, paste & scan job from the ST.

The two pictures were chosen for specific reasons.
The one on the left with him holding on to a glass , standing cool and laughing
away is the way we remember him , always being a good listener .
The one on the right, we believe is the way he wants to be remembered ,
handsome( like some Bollywood actor) and debonair and waiting for the girls to
come to him, like he would say to us.

BEYOND THE RAINBOW'S END

Beyond the rainbow's end, there lies
The land of love and light,
Where shadows never dim the skies,
For there ~~ there is no night.
And though the loss is hard to bear
Of loved one, or of friend,
We know that we shall find them there ~~
Beyond the rainbow's end.

Selva was my neighbour in KE Hall E Block in our first year. Thinking back I just recall something that truly was part of his laid back nature and easy acceptance of life. It was in the rainy season of December and during one afternoon we were both standing in the corridor looking at a downpour. I noticed that some laundry was left out in the rain and commented that some of the hostelites would have to redo their laundry. Selva just simply commented, Yeah, know how they feel, mine has been out there the last 5 days.
