The forward hatch was made of red oak with daddo and peg joints. In order to keep it perfectly square I clamped it over a form with plastic protecting it from glue drips. The joints were triple pegged on the forward side and double pegged on the aft side. The glue is Gorilla Glue which I have found is very tough and works well with oak. Since this will be exposed to weather the finished part was soaked in epoxy thinned with xylene. This protects the pores of the wood keeping out any moisture. The hatch was topped with a sheet of half inch smoked lexan secured with 18 stainless screws and bedded in black silicone sealer. |
