Prologue

The family was gathered outside in the garden behind their house, around a table with food set before them. Satsuki was anxious to make the announcement of the egg hidden away in the living room, ready to be shown to his other children. It was all going to be a surprise.

Kyo was grinning like a mad man. One more kid! Even if he was expecting to have three or four, like the first time, Satsuki had only laid a single egg. He sighed, willing himself to pay attention to the story Rose was telling them and stop thinking about the egg.

Hitsugi chewed on his french fries with an eyebrow arched, looking intently at his mom. The angel looked nervous about something. "Hey mom, are you okay?"

Satsuki smiled at his son, nodding in response. "Actually, your father and I have an announcement to make." Sana and Shou started paying attention at this point, having tuned out Rose's endless rambling. "We had another egg..."

Kyo smiled at Satsuki and reached out, squeezing the angel's hand. Rose and Hitsugi both looked at their parents for a while before reacting, the blonde being the first, leaping out of his seat to hug both of them. "That's wonderful! I wanna see it!"

It took only a few seconds more for Hitsugi, but he too smiled and walked around the table to hug them, kissing his mother's cheek. "Oh gods! More brothers!" He mocked, but couldn't wipe the smile off of his face.

"Let's hope it's a calm one." Shou commented, smiling some and getting up to join the hug. Sana stayed put, just smiling a little bit. He was still pretty upset about the loss of his own child. The rejoicing didn't last very long though because there was a crashing noise from inside the house. Satsuki looked over to it, automatically panicking for the safety of his egg.

Kyo barely looked at all, already jumping out of his seat and running to the door. He crashed into some chairs on the way to the living room, but didn't even feel the pain. He stopped at the door, looking around. The place was trashed, sofas turned, the piano clawed at and a lot of broken glass lying around. But the worst thing was the solitary egg near the window, carelessly thrown on the ground. "Oh no. Please, no..."

Satsuki was behind Kyo a moment later and he stared at the scene in horror before moving over to the broken egg, already feeling tears collecting in his eyes. How could this have happened?

Kyo was confused, angry, stunned. He didn't know what he felt, and right now he wasn't in any shape to really think about it. The demon just crawled to the broken egg too, shaky hand reaching out to turn the shell so they could look inside. A tiny body slipped out of it and Kyo released a choked sob. The baby was very pale and didn't move a muscle or open his eyes, tiny wings not flickering like his other kids used to. The demon reached for the body slowly, finally letting the tears flow when he cradled it in his arms, stroking the little chest. "Come on little one, don't leave us... Come on."

At the scene, Rose felt dizzy and fainted, Kang being right behind to get him before he fell. Hitsugi gasped and looked around, running to the front door and throwing it open, trying to get a glimpse of what had done that to his little brother.

Shou and Sana followed in next. Shou sensed something was not right in the air, there was just something so familiar about it. Sana moved to his parents side, knowing how it felt to lose a child.

After a minute or two, the baby moved slightly, its little chest moving up and down with its breathing as a tiny whine left its lips. Satsuki smiled and crawled over to Kyo to get closer to his child, filled with relief that he hadn't lost one.

Kyo couldn't stop the tears or the shaking of his limbs, but all he cared about now was that the baby was breathing. He smiled and sighed in relief, handing the little body to his mate so he could take his coat off and wrap the child up. "He's so tiny, Satsuki..."

Satsuki smiled and hugged the baby close, looking to his other sons. "Let's name this little survivor..."

"Toshiya..." Sana whispered, touching lightly the soft black tuft of hair on the baby's head. "His wings are different than ours. One black and one white..."

Kyo nodded, looking with interest at the little wings before handing the coat over so they could warm the baby up. No, so they could keep Toshiya warm. "I think that's perfect, Sana." Their son had already lost a child, so he saw no problem in letting the brunette name his brother.

"We should get him some milk, Kyo." Satsuki whispered to Kyo as he watched the baby open his little eyes and look up at him in wonder. They never gave a second thought to the fact that maybe Toshiya hadn't been the only one in the egg.

“So you managed it? Bring him here.” Kirito said, motioning for his brother to bring the baby over. Kohta set the child in Kirito’s arms a bit reluctantly. He didn’t really trust that Kirito could take care of a child. He glanced over to the chained angel to the side, still bleeding from being de-winged.
“What are you going to do with her?” Kohta asked, causing Kirito to look up from the sleeping child in his arms. He glanced over at Mika and shrugged.

“Have her take care of the child I guess. She’ll do it because he’s her nephew.” He answered, carelessly handing the baby back to Kohta. “Take him to the room we prepared.”
