Getting out of debt is much more difficult than the ease that got us their. Be proud of what you have accomplished . Not many people can say that they have no credit card debt, or maybe even no debt at all! Since you have worked so hard to be in the position of having no debt (or maybe have lessened your debt load), dont let things turn back around.
A good thing to do as you pay off your credit cards is to close the accounts as you go. Leave temptation where it belongs. Somewhere else aside from a monthly credit card bill. The best way to not go into debt again is to realize what you really need. Do you really need a new boat? Could you borrow a friends or rent one for a weekend? Are you able to save up for it then you can buy what is within your budget? Will a used car work just as well for your needs as a new one? How important is landscaping the backyard if you dont have the money to pay for it and will have to borrow? Could you break it down into smaller projects so that you can pay as you go? The bad thing about credit is when you are borrowing money to pay for something the cost of the item falls to the wayside. The only thing focused on is the amount of the payments and can you squeeze out anymore. The salespeople want you to spend an extra ten thousand on an upgraded boat, especially if it may only mean a $100 more a month. Always think of things in terms of actually paying them off. Paying off an extra ten thousand is a lot of money. And more than that when you add in interest. When you save up cash and pay for a large item you get a much better deal and spend less money. Keep your eye focused on the future and resist temptation. Think about purchases for a few days or larger purchases for a full thirty days or more. Let the impulse of the moment pass. And if you have to buy something on credit, dont let the salesperson sell you on something you may not need. Think about how you can pay the item off before the allotted time that way you wont stretch your budget too tight. Be prepared for bumps in the road. Plan for the future and for the unexpected. Its a nice feeling to have money in the bank to pay for an unexpected car repair as opposed to scrambling for which credit card has enough available credit on it. |
