One Piece of Wood

A man was walking along the beach,
when he came upon a piece of wood.
It had drifted up onto the shore,
in front of where the man stood.

One piece of wood, very plain,
its edges rough, wet and old.
The man picked it up and said,
I can make this wood a sight to behold.

So he took the wood home,
and began to shave and sand.
He began to do a little carving,
and soon had a toy for his son in his hand.

That was just one piece of wood,
the casual listener might believe.
But theres so much more in a piece of wood,
to those who will receive.

One piece of wood, in a dark stall,
was carved into a manger bed.
And there in Bethlehem many years ago,
Jesus, our newborn king, laid his head.

One piece of wood, in a carpenters shop,
was carved into a cruel cross.
Up to dark Gethsemane, Jesus carried the cross,
bearing the weight of our shame and loss.

One piece of wood, in a soldiers hand,
was used to nail the holes
into Jesus hands and feet.
And He hung upon the cross, to save our souls.

And what about that piece of wood
that we have inside our heart?
Is it a heavy cross for Jesus to bear,
or is it a hammer, tearing Him apart?

Or is it a cold and empty manger,
waiting for the Savior to enter in,
and lay His head upon our heart,
and wash away our sin?

So let the Father pick you up,
and sand and carve you with His knife.
And like that one piece of wood,
your heart will be fit for His sons life.
