It was also another high-quality year for the Scholarship Program in the Northeast Area.  Six outstanding applications were submitted for judging by:

Erika Davis, daughter of CED Jean and Brian Davis from Great Valley, New York
Claire Della Rocco, daughter of CED Tom and Margaret Della Rocco from Berne, New York
Allen Fagan, son of PT Anita and Timothy Fagan from Bliss, New York
Kevin Holck, son of CED David and Nancy Holck from Argyle, New York
Katlyn Read, daughter of PT Linda and Charles Read from Mechanicsville, Maryland
Alexander Truslow, son of CED Sandra and Christopher Truslow from Standish, Maine

Area judges were Wayne McKeever (WV), Linda Soucy (ME), Dave Stratton (PA), and Tina Whiteman (NY).  Tina was excused from judging this year since 4 of the 6 applications were from New York.  Even though Im sure she would have been impartial, it was decided that the other 3 judges could do the job adequately.  Their task was to determine the winner of the $1,500 from these very deserving young people. In very close judging, their choice was Claire Della Rocco.  Claire was unable to attend the Rally but her parents were in attendance and expressed their appreciation for the scholarship.

In a thank you letter to me, Claire stated: Thank you so much for recognizing my scholastic efforts with the generous gift of the NE Area NASCOE Scholarship; I am honored to be this years recipient.  She concluded with: I apologize that I will not be able to attend the NE Area Rally to accept this gift personally; travel time, transportation, and my school schedule makes it difficult at this time.  Thank you so much for presenting it to me.  Please extend my thanks and appreciation to all the NASCOE members who make this possible.

In my report at the Northeast Area Rally, I included information about the auction at the national convention.  Along with information about DSAs and Scholarships, the Professional Improvement, Sick Leave, Extra Mile, and First Timers Awards were discussed.  The membership was asked to provide me with any suggestions or requests to present in Omaha.

Also, the area held a scholarship auction at the Rally.  I am pleased to announce that over $1,300 was raised for the NASCOE Scholarship Fund which was forwarded to the NASCOE Treasurer.  I felt that this was a great result from the group of approximately 70 attendees.

Information concerning the Emblems website was also presented in my Rally report.  Many in the group commented on the quality of merchandise available from BEJs Advertising.  Emphasis was placed on the Outreach Items and Gift Certificates being available.

Thanks to John Lohr for allowing me to continue as the Northeast Area Awards Chairperson.  I want to publicly express my gratitude to all my judges for making the judging process an easy one.  Since I am planning on retiring in January 2009, John will be appointing a new chairperson to work with the new national Award Chairperson.  Ive truly enjoyed all the friendships Ive garnered over the years and thoroughly enjoyed working with this committee and, especially, with Herb.

At the Rally in New York, I reminded the Northeast Area of this and I want to share it:

Life is Short, Break the Rules,
Forgive Quickly, Kiss Slowly,
Love Truly, Laugh Uncontrollably
And, NEVER REGRET ANYTHING THAT MADE YOU SMILE!

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while were here,
we might as well dance..
