•My first view of Saipan on August 1, 1998. I flew in from Tokyo,
Japan. This is looking west, so you can see the east coast of the
island. |

•After landing, we stepped off the plane into an open air airport.
We walked down right by the Northwest Boeing 747-100. |

•We moved into different apartments at the beginning of September because
the first ones were too expensive. Here's a shot of the building
I currently live in. Our apartment is on the second floor, farthest
to your left. |

•Oops, almost forgot this one. In our first apartment building
there was one phone in the lobby. The six of us living there all
had to share this phone for calls home and checking email. Moe (Melissa)
would take any chance to use the phone, even if it meant eating her supper
in the lobby! |

•One of the joys of living in Saipan is living with cockroaches.
Actually the only joy we probably get from them is when we are able to
find one and exterminate it! |

•Ice Cream has become a more regular part of my diet here on Saipan.
With the constant heat and humidity, it's never a bad time for an ice cream
cone at my favorite shop, the Big Dipper! |

•Our school is locacted right on the beach. There are palm trees
all over the place, and most of the playground is one big sandbox. |

•I've been able to take a lot of short hiking trips so far on Saipan.
Here the correct term for this is Boonie Stomping. I suppose it's
called that because we stomp around in the boonies. One of my first
Boonie stomps was out to the Forbidden Island outlook. What a view! |

•Standing right on the edge of this island and looking out over the
Pacific Ocean is quite amazing. That's me and my friend Stephen enjoying
the view. |

•Here's what the view was straight down from where I was standing.
Yes, that is my head in the bottom of the picture. : ) |

•Saipan has a lot of beautiful flowers and plants. Here are a
couple. The white ones in the picture smell like lemons. The
lily was in the middle of a stinky pond, so I couldn't tell you what that
one smelled like. |

•At the end of each day of school, all the teachers have to stand outisde
and wait with their students for them to be picked up by someone.
As you can probably tell, we are quite thrilled to have our picture taken.

•On October 2, Jeff and I, along with our friend Stephen, went up for
a flight around Saipan and Tinian. Here we are walking out to plane
and taking a preflight photo. |

•Being in the air gives you a great way to see island.
Here we are flying over the lagoon, looking at the west coast of Saipan. |

•One place I love to visit is Managaha Island. I have three pictures
of the Island here. First, we see Managaha from the top of Saipan.
Secondly, we see Managaha from the air. And finally, a view from
the beach on Managaha. |

•October 4 was Nicole's birthday, and we went out to Tony Roma's to
celebrate. I likes picture because it shows a lot of my friends here
on Saipan in one picture. From left to right we have: John, David,
Sara, Joanna, Melissa, me, Stephen Nicole, Tony, Natasha, and Jeff. |

•Jeff and I have learned somethe local sign language. Here we
are displaying the sign for "HangLoose". It's a very common
sight and fits the laid back culture very well. |

•One night we were sitting in our apartment trying to think of
something to do besides grade papers. I tought we should go to the
local radio station and see if we could meet the DJ. Well, we did,
and now we visit the studios every once in a while. |

•My fiance, Jessica, was able to come out to Saipan for Christmas break.
One of the things we were able to do besides getting engagedwas to go flying
around the island. Here we are after our flight. I hope to
add more pictures within a couple of weeks. |

•Jessica and I found a hedge of pinkinsh, purple flowers near one of
the resorts here on Saipan. We liked them so much, we went back one
afternoon just to take some pictures there. We were quite pleased,
considering the pictures of both of us were either taken by the timer or
with my outstreched arm :) |

•We had a chance to go to Managaha Island to catch some sun and fun.
We even found a coconut tree to climb. Jessica made it halfway up
the tree. I made it to the top and even harvested a coconut which
Jessica enjoyed husking and munching on. (I am not a coconut fan) |

•Kayaking by moonlight is always a great way to enjoy a cool
Saipan evening on the Philipine Sea. |

•Another scenic, yet somber, sight to visit on Saipan is Banzai Cliff.
It is here where thousands of Japanese soldiers jumped to their death at
the end of the U.S. invasion of Saipan. There are peace memorials
from countries all over the world here. |

There's never a bad day for a nice cold ice cream cone on Saipan! |

•You may remember I mentiod that food can sometimes be a bit
on the expensive side. Well, having my fance here put a bit of a
drain on my wallet. : ) I had to go some drastic measures
to get the vegies I needed! |
