Big East Tournament

1. Tonight at 7:25 the Club will meet at Tiny's for ND's first game of the Big East Tournament. We will again gather there for any subsequent games (Big East or NCAA), if successful.

Syracuse-ND Football

2. In case you have not heard, enclosed is the SU-ND football announcement.

Syracuse University announced Tuesday that it has a three-game football series with Notre Dame scheduled. It marks the first time the two teams will have played in 40 years.

The Irish will visit the Carrier Dome on Nov. 22, 2003. SU will play at South Bend in 2005 and 2008. School athletic directors were in New York for the Big East basketball tournament and were unavailable Tuesday.

In the past, Syracuse has been unwilling to schedule a series in which it played two away games to get one at home. In fact, that issue caused the university to end its traditional football rivalry with Penn State in 1990.

Just the opportunity to get us a chance to play the caliber of school like Notre Dame, and a chance to bring them to the Carrier Dome it was just something that we couldnt pass up. said associate athletic director Rob Edson.

With the exception of Penn State, the Irish are probably at the top of the wish list for Syracuse fans. Then again, Notre Dame is at the top of nearly every schools wish list.

I just think our fans, and they have been great fans, have gotten very excited when we play the Ohio States and the Florida States and the Floridas and Tennessees and Michigans. Syriacuse head coach Paul Pasqualoni said. Personally, (Notre Dame) carries that kind of weight.

SU added Notre Dame as a 12th game in 2003, the second year the NCAA is allowing all schools to play a dozen regular-season games instead of 11. Syracuse also has 12 games in 2002.

There have been three previous meetings with Notre Dame, which leads the series 2-1. The last meeting was in 1963 at Yankee Stadium with the Orangemen coming from behind and beating Notre Dame 14-7 before a crowd of 56,972. Jim Nance led Syracuse with 53 yards on 11 carries. But the Orangemen won the game on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Rich King to Mike Koski with 3 minutes, 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

That was sweet revenge for the Orangemen, who were beaten 17-15 in a controversial game at Notre Dame in 1961. The Irish missed a field goal on the games final play but got a second chance when Syracuses Walt Sweeney was penalized for running into the kicker. The Notre Dame kicker made the second kick for the winning points.

Syracuse announced its non-conference games for the next four years on Tuesday. In 2001, SU has non-Big East home games against Central Florida, East Carolina and Auburn. The Orangemen also play at Tennessee. In 2002, SU hosts East Carolina and North Carolina. It will play road games at Brigham Young, Central Florida and Auburn.

Texas A&M Game Club Trip

3. Due to the fact that the Club's ticket allocation for the Texas A&M game is on Labor Day weekend, a preliminary survey needs to be taken of interest in that game. Accordingly, upon receipt of this memo, please call the Club's voice mail at 794-9499 and provide an indication of how many packages would you might purchase, for yourself, friends and family if a bus/train trip is offered. If we did it by train, the group would leave Thursday night arriving Friday morning in South Bend and leaving South Bend on Sunday evening, with arrival in Utica on Labor Day Monday. If the bus package is pursued, departure would be dinner hour Thursday evening from Utica with a stayover in Ohio that night and arrival in South Bend on Friday morning. The bus would depart from South Bend mid-day on Sunday and arrive late Sunday evening (with Labor Day to recuperate). In either case, accommodations would be in Granger Indiana, where we stayed several years prior.

Given the fact the game is a holiday weekend with conflicting commitments a trip might not be organized (with tickets only disbursed in some sort of objective manner).

Accordingly, all that is being ask at this time is that you immediately call to give a detailed explanation of interest as to type of trip (train or bus) and/or ticket only package along with the number of possible purchases for each.
