Dear Peter:

Thank you for your thoughtful letter and the enclosed suggestion. Since I just had my eighty-first birthday, I am fairly cautious about promising to attend something next year. However, as the date gets closer (I know you need a few months advanced notice), I would be happy to tell you honestly whether or not I can be with you. It would be a great joy to be with you and especially our alumni from the area where I grew up (Syracuse).

I am very grateful for your suggestion. I trust you will be back in touch with me when we are closer to the event.

Thanks for your thoughtful letter which caught me in the middle of the usual Christmas rush.

Since I have gotten this far along, I think I can now commit to being with you on Saturday, May 8,1999, to give the commencement address and receive an honorary degree. I will also be happy to meet with the alumni later that evening of May 8th but must leave the next morning.
