In those days the German Hotel was the home of many revolutionary exiles from Germany Austria, Italy and France.
They stayed there in April and May 1850 but had to leave again when they were unable to pay the �5 a week rent. Or as Jenny Marx put it: "one morning our host refused to serve us our breakfast and we were forced to look for other lodgings".
The building is still a hotel,now owned by Manzi's whose famous restaurant occupies the ground floor.
