Important Information for Parents
Each student will need to bring in a plastic-coated folder that was listed on the supply list.  This folder will be used as their homework folder.  It will be used to transport any homework or papers that I have returned to them.  They are not allowed to throw any papers that I have graded and returned in the trash can, in our classroom.  If for some reason you are not seeing any returned work in their folder it has been lost outside the classroom.  These folders also serve as a way for us to communicate with each other.  Any notes that you wish to send may be placed inside this folder and I am sure to receive them.  Every morning the children turn these folders in and every night they are sent home with them.
On the front of these folders you will notice your childs name and a number.  This number is assigned to them in order to keep better track of their books, folders, and other classroom items.  Along the back wall of the room there are gray mailboxes with each of the students numbers in order.  That is where I will put any announcements or graded papers.  Also, on the top of the cubbies next to my desk there is a blue box that I use as my mailbox.  If for some reason you need to slip me a note and dont want to interrupt or forgot to send it in the homework folder, feel free to place it in my mailbox.
Communication
Assignment Books
Each child will be issued a white assignment book for them to write their homework & daily reminders in.  At the end of every day the children are allotted time to write down the assignments that I list on the board.   Please check these books every night for your childs entry.  I will check them every morning to see if they have three things:
          1. The previous days assignments copied down.
          2. Their homework completed
          3. A parent or guardians signature.

I will keep track of this on a chart.  If your child receives the maximum number of stars available that week, he/she will have an opportunity to win prizes.
Discipline
I would like to give every parent an idea of the discipline plan that we have put in place over the last couple of days.  I have set up a system in which the children are given three warnings or strikes.  These strikes are listed on the board and are compiled as the day goes on.  The grounds for receiving a strike are anything from speaking while I or another teacher is, rough- housing in the classroom or hallway, and any other form of disrespect or aggressive behavior toward anyone inside or outside the classroom.  The first strike will result in the loss of five minutes of recess time. The second strike will result in loss of 10 minutes of recess.  If a student receives a third strike before lunch time they lose their recess and instead of sitting outside in time-out, they help out by cleaning up around the school.  Also, regardless of when they receive a third strike, I notify you by either a note or a phone call.  If the problem persists we will get together to remedy the situation.
Miscellaneous
Everyday the students are allowed time to eat a snack, usually around 10:00.  Each student will be paired up with someone else and assigned a week to provide snack for the classroom.  Snacks that have worked well in the past include:
Large bags of Chips or Pretzels
Big Container of Goldfish Crackers
Family size Popcorn boxes
Please refrain from bringing any dessert foods such as, cakes, cokes, candy or other sweets.

I am really going to work on giving the kids time in class to complete their assignments.  Please encourage your child to focus on using class time wisely, so you can have more family time at night, and more time for reading.  Hopefully, no one will have to spend more than an hour on homework, unless perhaps a project is being finished.  However, time spent should be quality and uninterrupted.  I am a stickler for good, quality work and expect the children to be proud of their efforts.  Lets really work on getting some good study habits under their belt before they enter middle school.

You are of course welcome to visit the class anytime.  Please remember to schedule time for a conference if you feel it is necessary to talk, drop in conferences are very difficult and never very satisfying.

*By working together we can ensure your child will make the strides necessary to achieve academic success.  I am very excited about this wonderful group of kids and I look forward to working with all of you.  I hope I have provided you with the verbal ammunition you need the next time your child says I wasnt assigned anything to do.  Thank you and good luck!
