MUSLIM ACCUSED

1- Omar Daraz - Karachi

Abdul Hafeez and Zaheer ud din filed a case under section 295-B, PPC against Omar Daraz on November 23, 2006. He was alleged for sought financial help from different people by sending pages from the Holy Quran attached with an appeal letter. The letter stated that he had four unmarried sisters and not able to arrange their marriages because of his poverty. Minority Concern of Pakistan December 2006

2- Bilal-Hasilpur - Bahawalnagar

Bilal of Hasilpur district Bahawalnagar was booked under the blasphemy charges (295 – C). A Muslim cleric Abdusalam Hamdani accused him of setting the Holy pages ablaze. A case was registered against him. The police arrested him and sent him to jail. Daily Nawa-e-Waqt November 9, 2006

3- Mumtaz Ahmad – Hafizabad

Lahore High Court rejected the bail application of Mumtaz Ahmad, a school teacher at Hafizabad. One of his colleagues had filed a case against him under blasphemy laws. Daily Nawa-e-Waqt September 22, 2006

4- Ramzan Sialvi - Jhang

Ramzan Sialvi, keeper of Pir Abdul Rehman Shrine was booked under a blasphemy case (295 – B) at Athara Hazari. He was alleged for making change in Kalima Tayyaba. On June 20, 2006 when he came to know that a case has been registered against him he escaped from the police station. Daily Nawa-e-Waqt June 24, 2006

5- Wajid Hanif-Lahore

Wajid Hanif of Samanabad was arrested on the allegation that he was pasting the posters, which contained blasphemous remarks against the Sahaba Karam (companion of the Holy Prophet). Police registered a case against him on the complaint of Syed Ahmad, Manager Auqaf Department – Punjab. Daily Pakistan January 18, 2006

6- One cleric and two others-Islamabad

Police arrested three people including a cleric on the allegation of desecrating the Holy Quran on February 25, 2006. A passerby informed police that 17 copies of the Holy Quran were dumped near a drain in sector G-6/4, Islamabad. The Police found Qazi Abdusalam a cleric in the Qutab Shaheed Madrassa, responsible for the act. Police said that the accused had admitted that he had sent his two students to dump the copies of the Quran in the well, however the students threw the copies in the drain. The police registered a case against them under section 295-B, PPC. Daily Times February 2, 2006

7- Muhammad Qasim - Ghotki

Muhammad Qasim, an Afghan was arrested on the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran on February 3, 1996. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Session Court Ghotki. His appeal against his conviction was pending in the Supreme Court after it was rejected by the Sindh High Court. On April 10, 2006 his appeal was dismissed and was sentenced to life imprisonment. 8- Ghulam Rasool-Vehari

Police arrested Ghulam Rasool (servant at Mosque) resident of Muslim Town, Vehari on April 27, 2006. Malik Sarfaraz alleged him for burning the old papers of the Holy Quran. A case was registered against the accused.                                                              Daily Din April 28, 2006

9- Munir-Haroonabad

Aamil (exorcist) Munir of Haroonabad was booked under 295-B, PPC on the allegation of burning the Holy Quran on March 25, 2006.                                                    Daily Pakistan March 26, 2006

10- Abdul Hameed-Bhai Pheru

Abdul Hameed of Bhai Pheru was arrested on March 3, 2006 on the allegation that he had started preaching, built Khana Kabba at his place and a Kalima including his name was written on it. The locals of the area surrounded the police station and demanded that accused should be handed over to them. The situation was difficult to control for some time.     Daily Nawa-e-Waqt March 4, 2006

11- Shafiq-Sialkot

Shafiq (20) of Kaluwal district Sialkot was alleged of desecrating the Holy Quran on March 18, 2006. He allegedly tore the pages of the Holy Quran following a domestic dispute and threw them into a cattle shed. The police arrested him and a case was registered against him under section 295-B and C, PPC.                                                                                  Daily Dawn March 19, 2006

12- Abdul Jabbar – Lahore

Abdul Jabbar (35) of Mughalpura – Lahore a mentally retarded person was alleged of setting pages of the Holy Quran ablaze which were found at his doorstep on June 2, 2006. Hundreds of people gathered at the spot and chanted slogans against the accused, however he managed to escape. Police arrested the accused and registered a case against him. Police also stated that the accused was an insane.                                                                      Daily Nawa-e-Waqt June 3, 2006
