Projects

Demonstration Prairie Restoration

The "Prairie Sampler" located between the "Old Library" and the pond has been maintained and expanded by the Ecology Association for over 25 years.  The initial planting was done in 1977. School groups have toured the demonstration prairie, and the Ecology Association has occasionally led groups to view the almost 150 species of Wisconsin native species which have been planted there. One of the activities done every 3 or 4 years is to burn the prairie early in the Spring to control dogwood and other aggressive plants.

The prairie plot is almost self sustaining, but work is needed every year to prevent the invasion by undesirable species of plants. If this is not done the native prairie plants will be taken over. If you would like to participate in this activity, or want more information, please contact one of the organization officers listed on this page.

The most recent burn was done on April 30, 2005.

Composting Video

Three members of the Ecology Association produced an 8 minute video showing the steps used to compost leaves.  The purpose of the video was to show that simple methods can be used to convert "yard waste" into a valuable supplement for gardens, shrubs, and flower beds. The video was shown multiple times on the City's cable channel in November.

In the future we would like to expand on the video by following up on the compost demonstrations and including more examples. Anyone wishing to share their composting efforts is encouraged to contact Paul Gihring at 262-786-2246.

Compost Bin Update

Photo at the left was taken on November 5, 2003 as part of the video. Photo on the right was taken on February 14, 2004. The composting bin is a simple, inexpensive wire cage.

The picture on the lower left was taken on May 7, 2004. Composting has continued throughout the winter. The picture on the lower right, taken on September 6, shows the finished product, which can now be spread on flower or garden beds.
