The National Juried Exhibition has been a staple of the National Black Arts Festival's Visual Arts programming since its inception. A panel of three distinguished members of the art community; Dr. Richard Powell , Chair of the Art and Art History Department at Duke University; Houston Conwill, internationally acclaimed installation artist and cultural historian; Deborah Willis-Kennedy, photographic historian and collections coordinator for the National African American Museum Project for the Smithsonian Institute-chose from entries by contemporary artists from different parts of the country working in a variety of mediums. In addition there were installation artists invited to be a part of the exhibit, this year. The artists and the works presented in this exhibit represent the best in contemporary African American art today. A special honorary wall is dedicated to the works of Floyd Coleman , professor of Art at Howard University for his lifetime achievement and his constant contribution to the African American art scene, and the spread of African American culture in the classroom and the gallery. The artists featured include: Ron Adams, Garry R. Bibbs, Chakaia Booker, Gloria Burroughs, Carole Byard, Schroeder Cherry, A. Dawson-Euba, Louis Delsarte, Rashida Ferdinand, Tyrone Geter, Russell Hamilton, Sol Sax, Clarissa Sligh, Peggy VanBuren, Carla Williams, Larry Walker, and Charlotte Riley-Webb. The National Juried and Invitational Exhibition is curated by Dr. Akua McDaniel, Professor of Art History and Museum Director for Spelman College. The Exhibition is held at the Georgia State University Art Gallery and will run from July 6 to July 19, 1998.

Moderated by Art Historian, Dr. Richard Powell, the visual arts panel discussion, "See the Real Me": African Americans, the Visual Arts, and Spectatorship, will explore the depiction of the Black figure in contemporary American art. From "the Hottentot Venus" to "Lil' Kim," and from nineteenth century racial stereotypes to Robert Mapplethorpe's black male nudes, images of black people have become the unabashed focus and visual evidence of people's fears, fantasies, and desires. The panelists include Thelma Golden, curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, N.Y., Emma Amos, acclaimed visual artist from New York, N.Y., Radcliffe Bailey, acclaimed artist from Atlanta and designer of the NBAF commemorative poster, and Charles Stone III, acclaimed media artist from Brooklyn, N.Y. The panel will take place at the Renaissance Hotel, on July 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

The National Black Arts Festival is co sponsor to Spelman College Art Museum's "Spirit of the Cloth" quilt exhibition, the Atlanta Historical Center's two photography exhibits, featuring works by renown photojournalist, Roland Freeman, and the High Museum of Folk Art and Photography Gallery's photography exhibition, featuring images by Roy DeCarava. The NBAF is also proud to present two Artist Markets this year.
