Royal Chitwan National Park

Official gazetted in 1973, this was the first area in Nepal to be declared a national park. Situated in the Rapti valley in the tropical lowlands of the inner Terai, it covers an area of 932 square kilometers. The rugged Churia hills, sal forests, grassland and rivernine forests, including swamps and lakes made by changing river courses, provide excellent habitats for an unusually rich variety of large mammals. It is one of the last strongholds of the Royal Bengal Tiger. Today there are only about a 1000 one-horned rhinos left in the World and over 300 of them are in the Jungles of Chitwan, among the "less than 2000 Tigers" are remaining in the sub-continent and over 40 live in Chitwan Alone. There are many other animals such as deers, Gharial fish-eating Crocodile, Alligators, Buffaloes, Sloth Bear,Hog Deer and Wild Peacocks & TIGERS in Chitwan.

In the south-east corner of the park, a small herd of elephant is occasionally seen. About thirty species of mammals including the Gangetic dolphin, are found in the park area. About 300 varieties of birds, including both migratory and residential waterfowl, can also be seen. A panoramic view of Manaslu and Himalchuli can be seen from here on clear days. Tourism management of the park is at present the responsibility of the park staff.
Elephants are available for game-viewing and jungle tours.
