| Two days after the massacre, the ship finally saw the Philippines. Of the one hundred thirty people who began the journey, only eighty-eight survived. Many died of starvation and sickness while others committed suicide. Thuan's family was still together and so were many of their village neighbors. Everyone was happy to be alive. Seeing the Philippines was paradise for all. Many yelled and celebrated before even landing while others wept for joy. Thuan and Kelly were still clueless as to what was going on. His father carried him him on his shoulders to show him what life was all about. While seeing land for the first time in two weeks, Thuan was happy. In fact, everyone was. Landing in the Philippines was the first and most difficult step to achieve, however living in freedom was well worth the journey. |
