Deep Tissue Massage
Swedish Massage
Releases the chronic, often painful, patterns of tension in the body through slow deep strokes using deeper pressure upon constricted muscles by going "against the grain" of the muscle or tendon. Similar to Swedish in manner although performed with greater penetration and focus on problem areas, often involving chronic pain or stiffness in the larger tissues in neck/shoulder area.
Utilizes systematic long strokes, light friction techniques, and kneading of the superficial layers of the muscle. This technique promotes general relaxation, improved circulation, increased range of motiuon and muscle tension release. Gentle stretching motion exercices are also employed. Excellent for those who do not like firm pressure and want overall relaxation.
Shiatsu Massage
This energy-based technique was developed in Japan with a large emphasis on compression techniques with the palm and thumbs along the energy meridians (which according to many Eastern philosophies channel the body's Ch'i - energy lifeforce). This technique brings balance and spiritual benefits which often last for many days after initial treatment.
My personal experiences have shown that it is often best to combine several techniques in each session in order to maximize the benefit to the client. As in the world in general, "one size fits all" programs simply do not result in quality massages. I like to work closely with my clients so that I can provide greater relief while also respecting their personal preferences pertaining to pressure and intensity. Those techniques which have proven most effective (and requested) are listed below with brief explanatory remarks which I hope prove beneficial for those interested in learning more.
