The Stockton Unified
School District (SUSD) Title VII Program at the Native
American Indian Center (NAIC) on the Edison High School
campus is dedicated to the educational advancement and
improvement of quality education for all our Native American
Indian and Alaska Native Students. Within the context of
traditional culture and values; through literature, oral history,
and cultural awareness, students are given a positive self image
which motivates higher academic achievement. During the
tenure of our program there has been a rise in the percentage of
graduating high school students, reduced teenage pregnancy, and
reduced gang involvement and drug abuse.
The
Parent/Student Advisory Committee (P/SAC) consists of a ten
person panel of at least one student and one teacher, with
parents of Title VII students filling the rest of the committee.
They approve the budget for the fiscal year and advise the school
district in procedural matters. Meetings are the first
Wednesday of each month of the school year. The SUSD
Annual Stockton Community Labor Day Weekend PowWow Committee
works in conjunction with the P/SAC.
The NAIC Title
VII program offers seasonal banquets and potlucks,
field trips to colleges and historic sites, as well as
summer education camp for participants. Tutoring is
scheduled to be available. Each Wednesday at 6:00 PM,
starting the second week of October, cultural workshops are
offered for the whole family throughout the school year. All
activities are multi-generational by design, as is
Traditional.
For a student to qualify as a Native
American Indian or Alaska Native, the parents must fill out
form #506. It requires the student's name; the name
of the Nation, tribe or band; and the parent's dated signature.
Call (209) 933-7425 Extension # 8069 to have this form mailed to
