The Beautiful McLaren F-1 Now don't take me to be an authority on this work of beauty, but I'll tell you what I do know that makes this car my favorite. First of all as you probably saw on the other page, 231 mph and street legal is quite impressive enough. Carbon fiber body design that has better tolerances to stress and strain than steel, yet it is considerablly lighter improving the performance of the vehicle. The driver actually sits in the middle of the vehicle with two passenger seats to the right and left of him/her. If I remember correctly this thing pushes something like 720 bhp in its V-12. McLaren is a British company known for racing Le Mans type stuff. This car could have been yours in the mid 90's (I think it came out more specifically in 95' or 96') for the price of $850,000.00 in the UK (U.S. value of course I'm talking here). However to make it qualify as street legal in the U.S. plus all the import taxes and stuff, it'll cost about 1.2 million dollars. I remember reading a Motor Trend magizine while waiting at a Discount Tire, and the authors got some Texas Billionaire (I wonder if it was Ross Perot?!?) to let them play with it. Anyway, the thing that stuck out in my mind the most was that they said it had the worst air conditioning on that hot day of any production vehicle ever made! That made me laugh. Anyway I think that they either only made 100 ever, or was it that they were only making 100 each year. Either way I'm quite sure that they're no longer in production. I personally fell in love with it when I was driving it through the French countryside.....on Need for Speed 2 for the Sony Playstation that is. |
