maputo, mozambique / 23.oct.1999

Mozambique is the only country in the world to feature a machine gun on its national flag. After the revolution that removed the Portuguese, and years of civil war, guns are an apt symbol of where the now-peaceful country's been. I met a Canadian volunteer who works for an organization called Tools for Weapons. Basically, they go into the countryside and trade sewing machines for AK-47s. The guns are sawn into pieces and then given to local artists, who weld them into sculptures.
