Oklahoma v. Texas Georgia @ Tennessee Cal @ UCLA Ohio State @ Penn State Texas Tech @ Nebraska
#6 Florida (4-0) 49 Kentucky (1-3) 28 Kentucky scored first to go up 7-0 on a Rafael Little run. Florida was not happy. Chris Leak abused Kentucky for 4 passing TDs in the first half, then he sat down. The score was not as close as it sounds, as Kentucky scored two 4th quarter TDs to pull it closer late, but it was never that close. Urban Meyer gets a real road test this week at Alabama. Next Week: @ Alabama (4-0)
#1 USC (3-0) 45 Oregon (3-1) 13 A collective hush went over the college football world as USC fell down 13-0 in the first half. Then Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart woke up and the Trojans scored the last 45 points. Is it surprising that USC fell down early? Definitely. That they went into the locker room down by a field goal? Absolutely. That they scored again and again and again and again and again and again and again? Not at all. This team may be the most talented offensively in history. They supposedly showed their mortality on Saturday, but that is only true if somebody else can do what Oregon did early. Arizona State has the offense, but probably not the defense. Next Week: @ Arizona State (3-1)
#2 Texas (3-0) Idle Next Week: @ Mizzou (2-1)
#3 Va Tech (4-0) 51 Georgia Tech (3-1) 7 I'm usually not in the habit of leapfrogging teams in bye weeks, but anybody else that saw the Hokies completely annihilate the Yellowjackets on Saturday likely breathed out the same holy smokes expression that I did. These guys looked exceptional on offense, defense, and special teams. In short, they were complete. More complete, mind you, against a decent football team, then anybody else I have seen this year. They looked like the best team in the country (no offense, USC). The real test will be if they can hold it all up for the rest of the season in a gruelling ACC schedule that may include a championship game appearance at the end of the year. If they can, they have what it takes to walk out of Pasadena with a crystal football in January. Next Week: Idle
#4 Florida State (3-0) Idle Next Week: v. Syracuse (1-2)
#5 Georgia (4-0) 23 Mississippi State (2-2) 10 Sylvester Croom has done a spectacular job reviving the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. The MSU D looked rock solid, and it was obvious that it was not due to any ineptitude on the part of Georgia. This did not even look like the same team that was shutout by the Auburn Tigers two weeks before. Amid rainfall from the outer rings of Hurricane Rita, State was playing real SEC football. Unfortunately, it was not enough to overcome DJ Shockley and the UGA Bulldogs. Now UGA must prove its mettle against a resilient Tennessee Vols team that overcame LSU in overtime in Baton Rouge on Monday. Next Week: @ #9 Tennessee (2-1)
#7 Michigan State (4-0) 61 Illinois (2-2) 14 OK, I think the whole hangover after a big win thing is pretty much over. The Spartans destroyed Illinois. D-E-S-T-R-O-Y-E-D. Drew Stanton, who I think most people outside of East Lansing had never even heard of before last week's victory over Notre Dame, catapulted himself into the Heisman Hype with a 5-TD performance in this game. Wow. Next week is a big test against archrival Michigan (who needs a win to stay alive in the Big 10, by the way), and fortunately for Michigan State, it is at home. Next Week: v. Michigan (2-2)
1 October
Notre Dame @ Purdue Florida @ Bama K-State @ Oklahoma Michigan @ Michigan St USC @ Arizona State
#8 Ohio State (3-1) 31 Iowa (2-2) 6 It was at home, true. Iowa did already get thrashed by Iowa State this season, true. But Ohio State's defense looked FOR REAL in this game. Iowa was held to -9 Rushing Yards. Iowa only scored on second half field goals. Drew Tate only threw for 146 yards. The Bucks, on the other hand, were dominant in nearly every facet of the game.. Troy Smith threw for 191 yards and 2 TDs and rushed for 127 yards and 2 TDs. Even though Ohio State lost two fumbles, they were irrelevant to the final outcome. The Ohio State has bounced back from the Texas loss. Next Week: @ Kentucky (1-2)
#9 Tennessee (2-1) 30 LSU (1-1) 27 OT WHAT A GAME. This Monday night showdown in Baton Rouge was unbelievable. Anybody that watched the Broncos thrash the Chiefs on ABC needs to have their head checked. Anybody that turned to ABC after the first half should have listened to Les Miles ("The first half score doesn't mean anything."). They missed one hell of a comeback by Rick Clausen, Gerald Riggs, Jr., and the Vols. Tennessee gets my full respect for having the strength of will to keep fighting in what must have been an exhausting battle with the Bayou Bengals. The finish in OT with Riggs breaking through for the final score makes this a true classic, and more than makes up for the loss in the Swamp by the Vols. Next Week: v. Georgia (4-0)
#10 Notre Dame (3-1) 36 Washington (1-3) 17 The story of this game was supposed to be Ty Willingham vs. his former team, but it turned out to be "pass right". Charlie Weis now has my full and total respect. With his Irish backed into their own endzone for the first play, he called a pass to the right, which amazingly went for a first down to TE Anthony Fasano. The play was the dying wish of 10-year old Montana Mazurkiewicz (named for Weis' former roommate Joe Montana). Montana never saw the play, as he died on Friday of the inoperable brain tumor that brought his request to Weis' ear. But Weis honored his promise, and called the play the boy had asked for, even though it placed the Irish in a difficult position. Apparently, Montana was with them, because that is seemingly all that can explain Fasano's amazing catch and leap for the first down. Anybody that thought ND might be the team to knock off USC when the Trojans come to town on October 15 may want to reconsider. Washington QB Isaiah Stanback threw for 353 yards on the porous ND defense. One can only imagine what Matt Leinart might be able to do. Next Week: @ Purdue (2-1)
