1 October
Notre Dame @ Purdue Florida @ Bama K-State @ Oklahoma Michigan @ Michigan St USC @ Arizona State
#6 Georgia (3-0) 44 Louisiana Monroe (0-3) 7 UGA has not looked particularly sharp yet, but they continue to win, this time in an overmatch (with their backups) of a struggling Louisiana Monroe squad. The Bulldogs better hope they can settle any troubles (such as the ones they had two weeks ago against Spurrier's Gamecocks) before they begin their three game road stretch (with Tennessee sandwiched in the middle). Next Week: @ Miss St (2-1)
#1 USC (2-0) 70 Arkansas (1-2) 17 USC proved this past week that there is absolutely no offensive problem with the departure of offensive guru Norm Chow. The Trojans put on Texas Tech-esque offensive performance against the stumbling, bumbling Razorbacks, involving everyone on the offense in a dazzling display of dominance. In only 1:32 in the first quarter alone, USC scored four TDs and had 246 yards of offense. The defense continues to bend slightly, but there is no need for stifling defense with offense like this. Next week looks only slightly more challenging with a trip to Eugene to face a plucky Oregon squad. Next Week: @ Oregon (3-0)
#2 Texas (3-0) 51 Rice (0-2) 10 This wasn't fair. The poor rice Owls had to face Texas in Austin, and Texas let them know early, with a 42-0 shutout at halftime. Vince Young did not put up any great numbers, but only played a half, and Jamaal Charles demonstrated why he was so highly prized as a prepster last year with 189 yards on the ground. Next Week: Idle
#3 Florida State (3-0) 28 Boston College (2-1) 17 Drew Weatherford and the Seminoles showed this week that their play against the Hurricanes was no fluke, this time on the road against BC. The Noles are looking stronger by the week, and may be on a collision course for the ACC Championship come December. There is a lot of football between now and then, but with an improving offense and stifling defense, the Noles look powerful. Next Week: Idle
#4 LSU (1-0) Idle Next Week: v. Tennessee (1-1)
#5 Virginia Tech (3-0) 45 Ohio (1-2) 0 Va Tech has a dynamic quarterback in Marcus Vick and a stifling defense. It is looking more and more like they will match up with FSU in the inaugural ACC Championship game. The Hokies dominated an Ohio Team that had just pulled off a major feelgood win over Pitt the week before. This was the second straight 45-0 win by the Hokes, who host an exciting Georgia Tech team next week. Next Week: v. Georgia Tech (3-0)
#7 Louisville (2-0) 63 Oregon State (2-1) 27 The Cardinals are cruising now, with all cylinders firing and Brian Brohm on track passing. This is a very high-powered offense, and it doesn't hurt that Louisville is in the Big East now (which gives them an auto-bid to the big dance if they win out). Of all the top 10 teams, it looks as though Louisville is the only one without any major hurdles left. Next Week: @ South Florida (2-1)
24 September
Tennessee @ LSU USC @ Oregon Iowa @ Ohio State Arkansas @ Bama Georgia Tech @ Va Tech
#8 Florida (3-0) 16 Tennessee (1-1) 7 This was in the Swamp, and it has always been difficult for the Vols to visit this place. Saturday was no exception, as the Gators used dominant defense and dead-on special teams to overcome Tennessee in Urban Meyer's SEC debut. The Gators are finally letting Leak run the show on offense, and it shows on offense. The Gators were successful converting numerous 3rd downs that they would not have with a more conventional approach. The Gator still has bite, and proved it on national television. The October 15 visit to Baton Rouge looks that much more interesting now. Next Week: @ Kentucky (1-2)
#9 Ohio State (2-1) 27 San Diego State (0-3) 6 The Buckeyes nearly collapsed a week after a spectacular performance against a very good Texas Longhorns team. Starting off slowly, the Bucks fell behind early, but rallied, scoring the final 27 points of the game unanswered. It was not the dominance that everyone expected, but it was a win, and it keeps them hanging by a thread onto the top 10. The Buckeyes should not have a problem getting up next week for a home showdown against the Iowa Hawkeyes, which will open Big 10 play. Next Week: v. Iowa (2-1)
#10 Notre Dame (2-1) 41 Michigan State (3-0) 44 The Irish finally had a let down after two big wins to start the season, falling by three to a dynamic Spartan squad in South Bend. The Irish almost pulled off an amazing comeback, with 21 straight points to tie it and take it into overtime. Unfortunately for ND, their FG was not enough, as Jason Teague scored from 19 yards out to seal it. The Irish should have it a little easier this week with a visit to the struggling Washington Huskies. The schedule ahead, however, looks daunting, as Notre Dame must still travel to Purdue and host USC and Tennessee. Next Week: @ Washington (1-2)
