Newspaper Summaries and Journal Directions:

The newspaper article summaries are to be DONE ONCE A WEEK.  The procedure is to read an article from an English language newspaper (please, no tabloids or other such junk).  Some examples of these would be The Miami Herald, USA Today, The Sun Sentinel, and (just barely) The River Cities' Gazette.  These are just some examples; other bona fide newspapers may be used.  Magazine articles may not be used unless approved by Mr. Naya.
Here is an example of an article summary from a student named Johnny X. Ample.  The student's correct heading will go in the upper right hand corner.

                                                           "Canes (11-0) Win, 63-17"
                                                                 by Ken Rodriguez
                                                                November 29, 1992

The University of Miami football team is one game away from winning its 5th straight
national championship in 10 years.  The team defeated San Diego State 63-17 on Saturday
night, November 28th.  Torretta, the Canes quarterback in contention for the Heisman Trophy,
was spectacular.  He finishes the year having broken many school records.  The U.M. winning
streak is 29 games long!

They will have a "showdown" on New Year's Day.  Their opponent will be determined by
this weekend's Southeastern Conference championship game between #2 Alabama and #6 Florida.
There were two fights during the game, and these became an unfortunate sidelight to a game
in which San Diego State had no real chance to win at all.

These summaries will be kept in the student's notebook until checked and then later collected
and placed into the student's portfolio (which the student will receive at the end of the year).

The journal must be done once EVERY SCHOOL DAY (this includes the days when the
student does not have Mr. Naya's class).  Please follow the pattern below.  Mr. Naya may
provide a topic during class, but if he does not, the student will have a free topic.  The DATE
and the DAY OF THE WEEK must be included for every journal entry.  The student must
write a paragraph at least and more than one day's journal may go on a page.

Monday, Feb. 7, 2000: I have a free topic today, so I'll talk about my website.  Today I've
worked on my website.  I am making progress and I have gotten a lot of work done.  I have
made several links to Florida universities and completed my "New Student Package" link.
Now I'll just polish it up and make it better and better for my students.  I hope that it helps
them a lot.

Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000: I have an assigned writing today.  I have to react to the film we watched
in class about the making of the movie Saving Private Ryan.  It was about how the film was
supposed to be a different kind of war movie.  This one was more realistic than any other which
I have ever seen.  Steven Spielberg discussed why he had made it, and the actors from the film
spoke about how important the film's message was.  The film was dedicated to the veterans, and
the message was that if not for them and their sacrifices, we would not be free today.  It was a
very important message.

If you have any questions concerning these items,  e-mail  Mr. Naya with your questions.
