Day One - Priming
The gallery suggested that I contact Golden Paints to get some ideas about materials.  The person I spoke to on the phone was very helpful, and it turns out that Golden Acrylic Paints not only has a great website, (
www.goldenpaints.com),  they have specific instructions on priming and painting fiberglass sculptures.  To prime the dog, I used a mixture of Golden Gesso and GAC 200, a medium made by Golden that helped the gesso to adhere to the dog.  My "better half", Jeffrey Lerer, who is an amazing artist and animator, let me paint the dog in his studio (I think our cat would have attacked it if we had kept it in our small NYC apartment!).  Jeffrey also gave me great feedback, technical assistance (which you will hear about later) and even lunch (!) while I was doing this project.
Day Two:  Background Color
The second day, I took a large Purdy brush and painted the background color on the dog, using large, rough brushstrokes.  I used a mixture of Golden's Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue and Liquitex Raw Siena, blended with Golden's GAC 100 medium (which helped me to make the paint more clear and glaze-like without having to add water).
