Chapter 24

Yes? I said, glancing up at him. How are you? he asked, his voice so timid. Fine, and you? I asked. Shane sighed, ok I guess. Look Shannon he began to say. I put up my hand to stop him Shane, I dont want any explanation or any sort of anything. I just want to be alone right now. I said, looking back up at the stars.

Shane nodded with understanding. Can I just sit here with you? he asked. I really didnt want him to, cause I knew that we would start talking, and I just wasnt ready to talk yet. I guess I said not turning to look at him.

Shane and I sat there in silence looking up at the stars. I could see him out of the corner of my eyes, glancing at me every once in awhile.
The silence was deafening to my ears, I wanted so bad to yell and scream at him. The alcohol had hit, I knew that I would never have wanted to yell at him if I was sober.

I heard the French doors open and the sound of Puff Daddy came flowing out into the night air. Jr staggered his way over to where Shane and I were seated. He plopped down on the same chair that I was on.

Oh this is so nice to see he said, slurring his words a little. I chuckled, finding him drunk amusing. So I hear you are going to Dover he said. I could see the expression on Shanes face change from sadness to pure glee. You are going to Dover? he asked facing me. I nodded, with Dee and Kev. Jr smiled, at what I have no clue. But he sat there, grinning from ear to ear.

The night went well. Shane and I chatted, just friendly of course. I had a few giggles as Jr started dancing like a chicken on the dance floor.

I called a cab to take me home. I was waiting outside for it when I heard the door open and close behind me. There you are Shanes unmistakable voice said. I felt him hand touch my lower back. I stepped out of his touch. Look I just wanted to say thank you. I was confused, I cocked my eyebrow and asked Huh? Shane grinned, I wanted to thank you for at least being civil with me. I dont think I could handle it if you had spent the whole night ignoring me.

I spotted my cab and gave a half ass wave to Shane. I hopped in a watched Shane as the cab drove away.

I was waiting outside my house for Dee to pick me up. I glanced at my watch, come on Miss Im-Always-Late I said to myself.

I saw her black Tahoe make the left into my drive way. I picked up my bags and double checked to make sure that my front door was locked. I threw my bags in the back of the truck and hopped in.

Heya I said, putting on my seat belt. Hey Dee said, a smile forming on her lips. Why are you so happy? I asked. No reason she shrugged.

We drove the 40 minutes to the airport. When we got there Kevin was already waiting for us. Cmon girls he said, standing there talking to Robby Gordon. Kevin and Robby helped us with the bags.

We boarded the plane and were on our way to Dover.

***************

The next day, Dee and I decided that we would go shopping. We had met Jrs new girlfriend at his party the other night. She had come with him to the track so we thought that we would invite her.  We rented a car and headed towards the closest mall. We drove through the town searching for the mall. Dee was getting frustrated. Where the flip is the dang mall? she asked, an ill tone in her voice. I chuckled and pointed off to the left hand side of the road. Dee glanced over that way and shrugged.

She took the left turn into the mall and decided to park outside the food court.

We headed inside and I saw a Starbucks. Coffee? I asked the girls. I grabbed myself a Caramel Frappuccino, Dee got a Espresso con Panna, and Melissa decided on a Mocha Valencia. We all got our drinks and headed through the mall.

We spent much of the day wading through the department stores. Picking thing here and there that we couldnt live without. I picked out a couple real cute outfits in Charlotte Russe, and a few things in Victorias secret. What are those for Miss Im-Staying-Single-Til-I-Die?!?! Dee asked, curiously. Maybe one day I will find a decent man I chuckled. Dee explained to Melissa about Shane and I. Hmm she said curiously He doesnt seem like the type.

Thats what I thought I said rolling my eyes.

******
We got back to the track and unloaded the truck. Dang girls, did you clean out the Mall? Kevin asked, from his position on the couch. HaHa I said sarcastically, I noticed Shane and Jr sitting across the room on the couch.

Shane silently nodded, I smiled back. We had been playing this cat and mouse game all weekend. I dont remember actually saying anything to him. Just nods and smiles. Oh well I thought to myself It could be worse, we could be at odds all weekend.
