Teshoa Type Scraper-Plane

Defining Characteristics:  This type was usually made on a teshoa flake or a short broad flake  The short flake would then be worked on each end unifacially to make two useful edges.  Some of these specimens have extensive use wear on their ventral surface.

Notes:  As with the Ridge-Backed, this type is provisional.  This type was found only in the vicinity of the Dismal Swamp.  I have not found reference to any other type of similar tool.  The minimum angle average was lower for this type, and it is thought by the author that the reason for this is that most of them found were discarded after extensive use and resharpening.

 Description of Figures:

a1:  Two examples of the Teshoa type planer-scraper.  Both were recovered from the same site.  The shape of the ends may represent extensive resharpening instead of actually intended shape.

a2:  Profile view of Scraper-Plane pictured in a1(right).  This is showing the flat ventral surface and the two worked edges.

a3: Close-up of Teshoa Scraper-Plane, showing retouched edges. Average number of edges used per plane: 2.4
